A psychologist explains here the APA guidelines that label "traditional masculinity" as harmful. They say that we should encourage positive masculinity. But how do they define positive masculinity? Lets see.
What does it mean for psychologists to treat patients by "encouraging the beneficial aspects of masculinity," as the guidelines suggest?
In a perfect world, we wouldn't associate a gender with a trait. But, unfortunately, culturally, these [ideas] still exist. Things like courage, self-sacrifice, we'd call those "pro-social" approaches [to masculinity] and we'd want to support people expressing or experiencing those things.
They think that the positive expressions of masculinity are the ones that make men disposable! You cannot make that up. According to the APA competitiveness is bad, but self-sacrifice is apparently positive. I guess being competitive is bad because men who are ambitious and successful=EVIL. Being cannon fodder and sacrificing yourself, however? Now that is the only positive masculinity that exists! If these people were really concerned for men they would be encouraging them to be successful and they would be discouraging the self-sacrificial tendencies, but nooo...
I thought that the APA guidelines were bad, but it looks like things are even worse. They want to encourage men to sacrifice themselves for others. Can you imagine something more messed up than that?
