The movie Gone Girl seems to be mainly about critiquing the way the society and media demonize men and favor women and how wives have the upper hand in marriages. But nobody seems to have noticed. Spoilers.

Above all else, Gone Girl is about how narratives become reality. The images we sell and how we invest back into what we think others perceive. I think that is a common discussion around the movie, and I think a common narrative in the Men's Rights sphere. I don't think the movie is specifically Mens Rights, but a good example of the sort of things we are arguing against and have to be aware of when making our case.

To a certain extent, we can also extrapolate the metaphor. Ben Affleck is representative of MRAs. Rosemund Pike feminism. NPH as male feminists. We are made out to be the aggressors, feminists the victims. They retreat to male feminists who become oblivious hapless victims to the image of the feminists. Now we are seeing our ideas gaining traction in the media and more feminists arguing they were always for these issues. This isn't to say all feminists are bad actors or there are nothing but bad consequences to this, but I can see a situation where the feminist ideology takes over the narrative in the MRM and essentially imprisons men for their own bennefit, like the ending of the movie.

And I'm not trying to make a MGTOW argument here, just saying we have to be careful with how we control our own narrative.

I remember seeing more than one review claiming that the main character was a feminist hero, for all the same reasons you saw it as a critique.

i was in a book club in which I was the only man (about 6-7 other members who always showed up for meetings and maybe 3-4 other flakey members). We began reading Gone Girl and at the first meetup hardly anyone had started reading it (even thought we were supposed to be half way in) and only a few other memebers showed up at all so we decided to let everyone catch up and discuss it the next week.

So a week passes and the next meeting was a total shit show. ALL the members to ever show up to a single meeting showed up, talked about how awful the book was blah, blah, blah how women couldn't do something so vile, that the author (a woman) is a misogynist, on and on and on.

then the leader decided we should not keep reading the book. it was garbage and not worth our time.

I didn't go back to that book club

I finally saw this for the first time on cable a few weeks ago. I was like: 'OMG, I relate to this so much! Why didn't I know about this?'

My friends: 'Dude, it was nominated for Academy Awards... why are you so behind on pop culture?'

Actually, as i recall lots of people noticed. There was something of a schism as to whether it was feminist or anti-feminist, though. Kinda like with Fatal Attraction.
