Why won’t you marry me Larry?? Why don’t men marry? Because there’s nothing in it for them: What exactly does marriage offer men today? “Men know there’s a good chance they’ll lose their friends, their respect, their space, their sex life, their money and — if it all goes wrong — their family,”

High school girls admitted to targeting and falsely accusing a boy of sexual assault because they 'just don't like him'. Boy was fired from his job, forced to serve time in a juvenile detention facility, is now home-schooled and suffers psychological trauma. School officials just didn’t care.

After decades of browbeating, men are tired. Tired of being told there’s something fundamentally wrong with them. Tired of being told that if women aren’t happy, it’s their fault. The rise of women has not threatened men. It has just irritated them.

This article is terrible. They have the right idea that its all about risk/reward, but seriously? "Oh, men just want sex and women are whores now." F, you Fox News. Then saying we're all just afraid of becoming sitcom stereotypes where the woman isn't a good little housewife? F you again. This ratchet a** compiling of mens issues misses the point on every single claim.

Its not that we want or need to take care of women, or want or need them to take care of us, its that we want respect in a relationship and recognition for the roles we do play in it and the sacrifices we make for it. I would say media representation has nothing to do with this issue outside of how it operates within a binary, to drive men to be perfect idealized versions of ourselves lest we become the buffoon. (Which works both ways and the illusion is another thing killing relationships in general.) Even still, this argument relies on us wanting to fit into traditional gender roles which is the exact opposite of what men want because it's the kind of BS that tells us to "man up" and shut up and just put food on the table.

The only point they get right is the massive risk of divorce. I do appreciate the attempt at understanding, but this only hurts us.

"Oh, men just want sex and women are whores now."

Don't discount the power of biological impulses. The increased ease of access to female sexuality is absolutely something that needs to be examined as a cause of the decreasing necessity and value of committed relationships, especially among men. It's not the only reason, but it's a substantial one.

[–]Evildl17 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Far from it. Rates of people who were never married remained virtually static until the 90s. That's thirty years from the sexual revolution through studio 54 through the coke orgy era. In fact in men specifically there was a drop in that percentage immediately following the sexual revolution.

There's a different cultural shift that happened in the 90s, and that specifically speaks to the rising divorce rates tearing families apart. Suddenly marriage was a risk. That's the change that's more visible.

Well said.

I would look at it from a slightly different frame: marriage has never been that great a deal and the idea that it's one-size-fits-all is wrong. People are getting married less because they are being appropriately wary about the commitment in a way previous generations were not.

[–]benderXX[S] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nobody wants to be alone but if the choice is to sign a punitive financial security product where one of the parties can be thrown in jail/ lose their assets and pay the other partition in perpetuity— then loneliness it is.

[–]dontpet 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I used to be in that boat, saying why marry? About mid 40s after a large number of lovers I found someone I really like and married her.

I was surprised in wanting to do this. It isn't entirely rational, as many of you say it isn't.

I just wanted her to stay. She was about as good as I was going to get and I just liked her a lot. I expect she will see me out of the world.

After 12 years and 1 child, I still like her. I'm glad I didn't marry earlier. But I'm glad I married her.

I hope you guys find something similar eventually.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

But I'm glad I married her.

Just as an intellectual exercise, why?

What did marrying her change?

[–]dontpet 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Good question. I guess I didn't really answer it earlier.

Peace of mind? Creating a life together?

While I still think of what it would be like to move on, I'm not bothering to think about it beyond the moment.

I imagine it has to do with the downside of having too much choice in your life. I have given up on that choice and at a feeling level gained something from it.

Peace of mind? Creating a life together?

how does marriage change any of those things?

I never had that with any of my previous partners. It could be others get that feeling in a longer term relationship. I didn't seem to, and I never wanted to before that moment when I just knew I wanted to be married to her.

I suspect that it really does come down to how having choice affects our life. I've seen article claiming overabundance of choice referred to as one of the drivers of poor mental health and less life satisfaction.

I guess it could be one of the lies I tell myself, that I'm happier for it. Like how we double down on many bad decisions.

Thanks for pressing me on the question. I'll have to think about it more.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

that's exactly my point, it's just something that's so deeply ingrained in our culture that we don't think about it intellectually...it's just something we do.

[–]dontpet 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

that's exactly my point, it's just something that's so deeply ingrained in our culture that we don't think about it intellectually...it's just something we do.

In my case, I don't feel like I just did it. I was about 45 when I made the decision after a dozen or so relationships of more than 3 months. And any number of short term things.

I don't wear a ring as it bugs me to physically wear it. I didn't care about a wedding at all. I didn't have a life time aspiration of being married.

I used to use the same logic as you, and still would for most men. But never say never is my advice when it comes to marriage. For now...

[–]Mackowatosc 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you can have both peace of mind and life together without marriage. You might want to give up on choice, but many of us EXPECT that right to be be ours regardless of what someone says or feels, or any situation that might even arise.

[–]LeBouffonRoi 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly, I think that we'd have to seriously take into account that people just don't associate with religion as much as they used to. Marriage and religion have kind of gone together to a certain extent, and there's less and less truly religious people anymore.

[–]superzepto 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm getting married and there's plenty in it for me. It's not a black and white debate.

Specifically, what does a state supported license have for you that a mature agreement between adults doesn't?

[–]Hirudin 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mutually assured destruction... at best. Unilaterally assured destruction more likely.

[–]The__Tren__Train 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

maybe he knows something that we don't

[–]benderXX[S] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry I am with questions already asked. What is it in for you. It’s a financial security product that often pays to one party only. Other than that what’s in it for you.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can you elaborate?

[–]1LegendaryWombat 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep, i agree with the trend. Personally i think marriage is a sham, an expensive sham at that.

If you really want to spend the rest of your life with someone, just do it. Doesn't require a ring, a big humbug or any of that crap. Too often marriage means the death of a relationship soon after. The Diamond industry is dying, marriage is dying and more, all these 'traditional' and useless things in society are going to way of the dodo because people are finally wising up to them.

[–]Mcquaker 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it is not referring to the marriage act but the institution of marriage

Women fail the sandwich test. They'll never make one for you, under any circumstances. Why are sandwiches a big deal? Because they're dead simple to make. Even someone that is waving hands in the air, "I can't coooook" can make a sandwich. But they won't, will they?

I've cooked for every single one of my girlfriends. None of them have cooked for me, ever. It never happens. Is that not a form of privilege? Out of dozens of people I've dated, only two ever bought me a dinner. Privilege? Almost zero gifts. Bottom line, they ain't trying too hard, and they aren't feeling much.

I've had more guys cook for me and buy me food than women.

Think about it, really think about it. What has any girl ever done for you? Even something small. It's really hard to think of just a few examples. But then flip the tables. You've done so much shit for them you could write a book.

Are you married? Compare father's day to mother's day.

Sex? Trigger word.

Women kinda treat men like shit. Period. It's getting harder for me to understand why someone would want to get married.

[–]gloryhole87 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’d be all for a ceremonial religious marriage, calling her my wife. But not legally

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, this is what appeals to me about MGTOW. I really don't understand a number of their issues, and the misogny really is rampant. But, marriage with, children with, or living with a woman - MISTAKE!!!

In what other area of their life would a rational person, man or woman, accept a 50% risk of losing their home, access to their children, half their wealth - regardless of who earned it, and a significant part of their income?
