Can you be a bit more specific? There is no reason to get a circumcision as an adult unless it's medically necessary, which is rare. Asking this is a little like asking for articles on why it's bad to cut off your hand.

[–]takemetothemosque 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Well I’m being forced to get one by religious parents

[–]Warrenfernalchild 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Aaaah, that explains the situation.

When you say adult, do you mean you're about 16, or do you mean 18+, legally independent adult? If the latter, what do you mean forced? If the former, assuming you don't want to undergo this, you need to strongly, clearly, and if necessary, physically refuse. Doctors will refuse to perform the procedure if you are clearly not consenting. Make it absolutely 100% clear that you refuse to have this procedure done and will resist any attempt. I also strongly recommend asking about this on /r/legaladvice to get legal advice on the matter.

As for evidence, here is a great resource

[–]mikesteane 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That resource should be sidebar material.

Yes I’m 20, legally an adult. The problem with me showing clearly that I don’t consent is the consequences I’ll face from my parents when they’re informed that I refused the procedure

[–]bassatwork 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They might get over it.

You will regret it forever. Please dont.

[–]iainmf 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

when they’re informed that I refused

Your doctor should keep your medical information confidential. If they don't get another doctor.

[–]takemetothemosque 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You think a doctor would go along with pretending to do the procedure?

[–]FickleCaptain 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Federal law requires that your medical information be kept private.

[–]iainmf 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think a good doctor will keep your information private. They should not tell anyone anything about your medical care. If it's your family doctor (the same doctor as your parents) then it's possible they may let something slip accidentally. If someone asks them if you've been circumcised the answer should be "We don't discuss confidential medical information with anyone but the patient."

I guess it depends how deceptive you are prepared to be. If you are happy with a little subterfuge it might require booking and paying for the procedure and showing your parents the receipt. Just turn up and say you've changed your mind. Then take a day off because you don't feel well. They'll assume it's because of the circumcision.

If you don't want to be that deceptive you might need to get another solution.

[–]takemetothemosque 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thank you for your response. I fear that being deceptive is my way of preventing this procedure

[–]iainmf 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good Luck.

[–]FickleCaptain 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No doctor will perform a circumcision without your consent. Your parents cannot consent for you unless you are are incapable of consenting due to some incapacity. That is not the case here.

There also is the issue of who is going to pay for it. Circumcisions cost several thousands of dollars.

There are no medical reasons for this religious circumcision. Insurance may or may not pay for it.

It will be up to you are your parents to pay, if insurance will not.

There are a lot of good things about not being circumcised.

If you are still living with your parents, I urge you to find another place to live as soon as possible.

That is unfortunately their legal right. You have complete control over your body, they can't force you to do anything, but they can choose how they want to treat you. If they want to kick you out of the house, disinherit you, cut off contact, they have that right. The best advice I can give you is to become independent so their threats have no weight.

As for arguments to use against them, avoid stacking lots of arguments and instead just focus on 1-3 big arguments that you know will resonate with them. Do they care about you having a good sex life with your future partner? Show them the studies on how it affects you and your partner's pleasure. Do they care about psychological harm? Show those. And so on. Figure out what they care about and target that aspect.

If there is nothing about your wellbeing that they care about more than their religion, you cannot change their mind. Then you have no choice but to simply say no.

[–]mikesteane 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Instead of saying no, just say that you have doubts and you don't feel that you are ready yet, but will do it when you are sure. Then never do it. Save unnecessary conflict. Also, they may feel that they are somehow not living up to the standards of their community if you don't do this. I may or may not be right about this, but the associated status may be a driving force behind them. If it is the case, try to find a way of saving face for them. Let them conclude that allowing you to make your own choice is better, holier or whatever than trying to force you.

Edit: note that there are numerous contraindications for circumcision. Some information is here but you might like to take advice from your doctor to find a condition you could claim as preventing you being circumcised.

Why can't you lie? What possible situation would clue them in on it?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

assuming you are in the west, you have a right to medical privacy. They don't have a right to know what surgery you did or didn't do under law.

[–]mikesteane 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They don't have a legal right to know.

[–]Talbooth 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know about you, but I would rather be on the street than having part of my dick chopped of. One is reversible by hard work, the other ruins parts of your life forever.

[–]Sininenn 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I definitely recommend r/Intactivists. You're going to find more materials there, or, at leadt some more knowledgeable people there.

Out of my head I can give you definite loss of sensation and pleasure during intercourse over the years, aesthetic downsides, such as scarring and glans keratinization or the fact that it's your decision and you should be the only one that gets to make it.

Think about it as someone removing your lips. Sure, it'd make it easier to clean your teeth, but your tongue would lose most of its taste and your face would be scarred forever.

I really, really, really hope you get to choose what you want. But please, try to inform yourself as much as you can. There's an article on the subreddit that basically debunks all Mayo clinic's false claims about circumcision, all past medical claims and a lot lot more.

Good luck mate.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps mention how the form of circumcision practised today is not the form done to Abraham or Jesus, where only the tip of the foreskin was removed. The current form is based on orders by radical rabbis in c. 141 AD where they didn't want Jewish boys looking like non-Jewish boys so they tortured them further with complete foreskin removal. Not sure of the specific Muslim history. Whatever you say, this is your body and non-negotiable, they don't own your body and they shouldn't be concerned about your penis.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

how old are you???

[–]takemetothemosque 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

20

[–]FickleCaptain 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The vast majority of circumcisions in the United States are perpetrated against children who are unable to consent to the total violation of their rights under domestic and international human rights law.

These circumcisions have no medical indication and are non-therapeutic. They are totally unethical.

Here is one discussion of the international human rights.

https://www.doctorsopposingcircumcision.org/for-professionals/human-rights/

The result of this practice is that most of the males in the United States have been unjustly deprived of a body part with protective, immunological, sensory, and sexual functions.

There actually is much more to be said about this.

[–]Thekillerklok 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Circumcisions are sometimes botched.

If you like your penis I would recommend strongly against this.

[–]takemetothemosque 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes I’m very much against it

[–]Thekillerklok 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I would adamantly refuse.

If someone tells you to drink the kool-aid don't go with the flow.

[–]takemetothemosque -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And what about the consequences for refusal?

[–]Thekillerklok 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my experience meekness will get you shat on in life.

Defend yourself or get bullied into suicide.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

unfortunately no one can force you to do anything. if you're 16+ you have right in us ca and eu that allow you to not agree to this. and hell of they push then cut your parents off like they wanted to cut your foreskin

[–]kitten5150 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are 20. Say no

[–]intactisnormal 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tge foreskin is the most sensitive part of the penis. This diagram was from a study measuring sensitivity on multiple points of the penis. The full study here.

Here Dr. Guest discusses what the foreskin tissue is, innervation, how the most sensitive part of the penis is removed by circumcision, the mechanical function of the foreskin and its role in lubrication during sex, and the possibility of decreased sexual pleasure for both male and partner.(nsfw slides)

Tell your parents to shove their barbaric cult up their own asses and keep it there.
