I love the FB page named "Motherly". They always post about how being a father is just as important as being a mother in parenting & how children need their fathers. So wholesome.

Love how my professor included how men are also affected with postnatal depression & anxiety. (I'm in Queensland, Australia for those who are wondering)

I think she's confused

[–]Lethn 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She's also given us a great way to annoy feminists :D

This is what critical mass looks like.

You can be vulnerable and soft. You can falter, fumble and learn. None of that is keeping you from also being strong and resilient. I don't know why people think that showing vulnerability is automatically weak.

The problem with feminists is they're incapable of knowing the difference between being a push over and being strong enough to defend yourself and not get manipulated or controlled.

That being said, I think it's not just feminists but most people especially men have forgotten how to stand up for themselves, things seem to be turning around finally but it's taken a long time. It doesn't have to be just a thug out on the street. Manipulative people like feminists are experts at skirting about society and picking on people they think are weak and I think that's why people have struggled to deal with this sort of thing.

The old mantra of 'never hit a girl' and so on certainly hasn't helped things.

Dictionaries are your friend.

Vulnerable - susceptible to physical or emotional attack or harm. synonyms: helpless, defenseless, powerless, impotent, weak, susceptible

[–]armaadi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Showing vulnerability doesn't mean that you can't also show strength or resiliency, though. No one is perfectly invulnerable. Part of bonding with others is being able to be vulnerable. We don't like characters that have no flaws, and we actively look down on Mary Sue's.

I'm basically arguing that a woman doesn't have to be flawless to be strong, any more than a man has be flawless to be strong.

My point was that the comment was

I don't know why people think that showing vulnerability is automatically weak.

And I pointed out that a synonym for vulnerable is weak... they mean the same thing, so showing vulnerabililty is being weak... I wasn't making a moral judgement about it. It was a grammatical explanation about why people equate being vulnerable with weakness.... BECAUSE THEY MEAN THE SAME THING....

I don't understand why people are pushing this concept of strength and weakness. When did this become important? Why do we even care? What do we need to be "strong" or "vulnerable" to? Why is it that most Americans have this war mentality that there is always an enemy, and we have to decide whether strength or vulnerability will "win". What competition are people having in their heads? Men and women are constantly struggling with their gender identities and these strong versus weak concepts. People need to just live and decide what's best for themselves.

Women are far too concerned with how they appear to men, who they claim to hate. It's the most illogical thing. And men are always looking to appear more vulnerable, to show their softer side to appeal to women, possibly in a feeble attempt at mating. The fact is we're just here to procreate, and whatever song or dance you want to do to get someone to mate with you is up to you.

But women need to either shit or get off the pot. Decide whether they want to be "submissive and weak" or "strong and independent". Most men are getting mixed messages because so many women have their own idea of what all women should be. And let's not kid ourselves here, women hold the key to sex, and men can't procreate without their say so.

So let's just agree that women need to decide how the want to approach male and female relations. Men will follow suit, but it's got to be equal opportunity for both. The outcomes may be different in terms of relationships and marriage, but the opportunity for both to succeed have to be there, or we're all just spinning our wheels and waxing on about nothing.

Vulnerable means you can be knocked down physically or emotionally.

Strong means you get back up.

[–]tenchineuro 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

"strength is, itself, a patriarchal hangup".

She's not been paying any attention to feminism, like, for her entire lifetime.

One recurring feminist sound-byte is that men fear strong women, when the reality is that feminists fear all men all the time. And what is a strong women? Other than that men fear them I have no idea and asking what it means has never resulted in an answer. Perhaps it's like an observer in QM, it's undefined, or perhaps left as an exercise to the reader.

That's strange, I associate failing, learning and keeping on going with strength...

[–]col2eight 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

...they're going back to where they started.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is excellent advice, for women.

For men, no, not so much.

[–]Samisseyth 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How about you just be who you want to be and lay off the beauty magazines written by other judgmental women.

[–]Couldawg 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How about that. The patriarchy is now responsible for Girl Power.

[–]NecroHexr 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Haha, that's hilarious. Feminism has gone full circle. Now they want to cower and be weak and let men cover for them.

[–]Blutarg 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What a special snowflake, bucking the tide, saying what other people aren't saying. Courageous and brave.

[–]moose-rider32 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

At first it was "be strong" so you didn't have to depend on men. Now it's"be vulnerable" so you have to depend on them.

Every complaint like this pushes me further away.
