Female privilege is having your rapes called "relationships".

[–]prodiver 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is a relationship, not a rape. The student was over the age of consent.

Had she not been a teacher the relationship would have been fine.

Sure but she is a teacher which makes a crime.

[–]prodiver 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, it is a crime.

I said it wasn't rape, not that it wasn't a crime.

The crime was “indecent liberties with a student.”

[–]JamesBCrazy 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Not "having sex." Raping. Get it right.

[–]Brusanan 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

The age of consent in NC is 16, so this isn't rape.

[–]Jguy97 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually the age of consent in NC is 16, if the other person is within 4 years of their age. If not it’s rape.

[–]prodiver 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. A 90 year old can have sex with a 16 year old in NC. It is not rape.

The 4 year exemption means an 18 year old can legally have sex with a 14 year old, since they are only 4 years apart in age.

I thought it was a relationship? That was the last headline I read.

[–]Newbosterone 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hope there was an implicit \s tag on that last past.

It's only a "relationship" when the teacher is a woman, and the student is a boy or girl. See Instapundit's "teach women not to rape" posts.

allegedly had a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old male student, FOX46 reported.

What?????

A 17 year old CAN. NOT. CONSENT!!!!!

[–]Hero_764 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

This is why I can't take Men's Rights seriously. You know full well that the kid consented and probably had the time of his life. Cmon dude.

[+]omellil1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

I could go hang out around my local high school and seduce some 17 year old girls, too. They would consent and have a great time. I bet I could get them to show up in court and tell the judge it was true love, even! So, that would be okay with you?

[–]prodiver 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So, that would be okay with you?

Yes. If the age of consent is 16.

The problem here is the student/teacher dynamic, not the age.

[+]omellil1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Alright, if that's how it is then fair enough. I respect your opinion, but I don't think you and I could ever be friends.

I suspect that if you actually saw me (or someone like me) taking advantage of a young girl like that (and that's EXACTLY what it would be) you wouldn't in practice be quite so chill. But if you say so, I'll take you at your word.

[–]prodiver 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I would be "quite so chill."

If it's legal and consensual, how exactly is someone being taken advantage of?

Women of legal age are not children, and don't need to be protected from their own choices. Who she chooses to be in a relationship with is her business.

[+]omellil1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks for your reply; I'll try and answer your question.

Unlike the mind of a 35 year old, the mind of a 17 year old isn't fully developed, no matter how cool my Porsche may be. The 35 year old always has control. That's unfair, and in the interest of brevity & clarity : that is how, exactly, someone is being taken advantage of. If there are exceptions, they are rare.

As far as I can conceive, and please understand that I am sincerely not trying to be rude, there are only three options:

  1. You may know that there is a power play and someone is being taken advantage of in such a relationships probably +95% of the time, however for whatever reason you are willfully refusing to acknowledge the fact, or,

  2. Perhaps you are a young person yourself, and therefore aren't capable of grasping this concept yet, which if this is the case, it is nothing to be ashamed of any more than not gasping the experience of your child's birth for a person who has had no children. Young people can be incredibly intelligent and have superior hardware, figuratively speaking, but some of the more nuanced software takes time to install and to understand how to utilize.

  3. Or perhaps still, you might be simply not intelligent enough to grasp the reality of the situation, which is that there are strong social advantages resulting from a certain type of wisdom which is a byproduct of age & experience, and how those advantages may be used to manipulate young people unfairly, if so applied. Of all the options, I'm most certain that this is not the correct one, however I list it only to cover all the bases.

If you feel there is a 4th option, please tell me about it. That will be an answer in itself.

I recognize the importance of law, and I choose to respect the law, as I choose to live in Canada. If I choose to not obey the law, I do so understanding there may be consequences. I don't need the law to tell me right from wrong any more than I need the Bible to do so. The law is simply the rules, and has little to do with right or wrong. I understand that the age of consent in many places is 16 or 17 years old. If that is the law, there is no argument to be had. A grown adult with a child is wrong, and that's got nothing to do with whatever law is in place at the moment. I know where I stand in such matters.

What you're saying is that the relationship is likely to be a toxic one. You're right. Should the State regulate who can people choose as their romantic partners, though?

And, in any case, none can argue that having sex as a mentally healthy 17 years old is an intrinsically traumatic experience. "Consent" isn't about the ability to choose a good romantic partner - an ability many adults lack - is about whether damage inevitable happens if there is sexual interaction.

[–]alc0 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the MRA outrage has more to do with the double standard.

[–]Brusanan 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The age of consent in NC, and much of the US, is 16.

[–]juanml82 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Does the guy's brain changes if he crosses an imaginary line on the ground into some state/country with a higher age of consent? Or is a person's ability to consent to sex independent from legislation?

[–]mwobuddy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks. You're using my magical-brain-deformation-by-geographic-location-in-situ-with-arbitrary-state-lines argument.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Consent to sex with another minor, not an adult.

Consent to sex with an adult is 18.

Although I do believe most places have Romeo and Juliet laws where it's not illegal for a 19 year old to have sex with a 17 year old.

However, in this case, the 17 year old most definitely could not consent.

[–]Brusanan 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's not how it works. Statutory rape laws and Romeo and Juliet laws only apply to individuals below the age of consent.

Here's an article that goes into a bit of detail: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2015/05/01/statutory-rape-laws-in-the-u-s/?utm_term=.a55780334f88

Well I'll be damned.

Learned something new today! Thanks for pointing that out to me.
