I could go hang out around my local high school and seduce some 17 year old girls, too. They would consent and have a great time. I bet I could get them to show up in court and tell the judge it was true love, even! So, that would be okay with you?
Alright, if that's how it is then fair enough. I respect your opinion, but I don't think you and I could ever be friends.
I suspect that if you actually saw me (or someone like me) taking advantage of a young girl like that (and that's EXACTLY what it would be) you wouldn't in practice be quite so chill. But if you say so, I'll take you at your word.
Thanks for your reply; I'll try and answer your question.
Unlike the mind of a 35 year old, the mind of a 17 year old isn't fully developed, no matter how cool my Porsche may be. The 35 year old always has control. That's unfair, and in the interest of brevity & clarity : that is how, exactly, someone is being taken advantage of. If there are exceptions, they are rare.
As far as I can conceive, and please understand that I am sincerely not trying to be rude, there are only three options:
You may know that there is a power play and someone is being taken advantage of in such a relationships probably +95% of the time, however for whatever reason you are willfully refusing to acknowledge the fact, or,
Perhaps you are a young person yourself, and therefore aren't capable of grasping this concept yet, which if this is the case, it is nothing to be ashamed of any more than not gasping the experience of your child's birth for a person who has had no children. Young people can be incredibly intelligent and have superior hardware, figuratively speaking, but some of the more nuanced software takes time to install and to understand how to utilize.
Or perhaps still, you might be simply not intelligent enough to grasp the reality of the situation, which is that there are strong social advantages resulting from a certain type of wisdom which is a byproduct of age & experience, and how those advantages may be used to manipulate young people unfairly, if so applied. Of all the options, I'm most certain that this is not the correct one, however I list it only to cover all the bases.
If you feel there is a 4th option, please tell me about it. That will be an answer in itself.
I recognize the importance of law, and I choose to respect the law, as I choose to live in Canada. If I choose to not obey the law, I do so understanding there may be consequences. I don't need the law to tell me right from wrong any more than I need the Bible to do so. The law is simply the rules, and has little to do with right or wrong. I understand that the age of consent in many places is 16 or 17 years old. If that is the law, there is no argument to be had. A grown adult with a child is wrong, and that's got nothing to do with whatever law is in place at the moment. I know where I stand in such matters.
