Please don't show the Big Think "author" of this film of sperm actually swimming: all that frantically enthusiastic wriggling - almost as if they're enjoying it - will upset him deeply.

I'm not on tw@tter, but as is my wont, I went and chased the tweet and it links to this article by Philip Perry from a year ago (archived link). In it, he writes as though he has "discovered" some heinous plot by Science and Scientists to discriminate against Wimmin - oh! the outrage - so I naturally assumed he had credible sources that would elicit sound data... well, not really. It's rather hilarious, in that good-god-did-you-really-think-that-would-fly-you-muppet sense.

Nonetheless, I considered sexism in the act of copulation. The human vagina is very acidic (pH ~4.0) whereas sperm needs pH of 7.0 or more for optimum viability and motility - thus, the vagina is a very hostile and toxic environment for sperm. As if that weren't enough, they have to climb past the cervical wall. Of ~200-300million sperm per ejaculation, only a couple of hundred survive - that's a 99.9999% death rate.

By Big Think's yardstick, that's not sexism but genocide.

So then the sperm inserts/enters the egg? Somehow I don't think this definition would satisfy feminists either.
