What does white have to do with anything? Every race of woman gets privilege and a crime pass. Not to mention wealth and power clearly helps...

Yeah, but if you're a black person (or a white person) who grows up in a ghetto, your life overall is probably not the most awesome there is. Granted, not as bad as if you are a male raised in a ghetto, but not the greatest all the same. As much as possible I try not to kick a person when they might be down.

The thing is though, on the "privilege" scale, something that most SJWs miss is that class is SO VERY FAR above anything else. If you are rich and connected, it doesn't matter WHAT else you are, you're more privileged than anyone else, of any sex, race, etc. So this is an example of class privilege, not really race or sex.

It's actually the biggest problem I have with most of the inter-sectional feminist/SJW/whatever thoughts right now. Somehow they want to completely glaze over the fact that being rich and well connected is the most important aspect of success, and getting whatever you want. I don't know if it's because it fits their "narrative" the best, or because most people with the time and ability to go into things like Gender studies, or devout their lives to social justice necessarily come from a privileged enough background to do so (there's something about struggling to put food on your plate that tends to make you focus on the here and now).

The thing is, personally as a cis/straight/white/male who comes from a middle/upper-middle class background, I HATE being told to "check my white privilege/male privilege/straight privilege/etc", because I don't believe those things come with the privileges I'm being accused of. That said, if someone EVER told me to check my class privilege (which has never happened by the way) I would be completely on board with that. I WAS privileged in that way. I was privileged by having two parents, by my mother being able to stay home for 10 years while my father worked, by my parents being educated enough, with enough time, to help teach me concepts I didn't understand in school. I was privileged because my dad was able to get me a job (not a great or high paying job, but a job) in the summers when I was in University to help pay for my tuition. I was privileged because my parents paid for my room and board while I was at college, and I didn't need to work during the year. I was privileged that after university, I was able to get a job that eventually turned into a relatively lucrative career because my father knew someone, who was able to float my resume around.

I was super privileged because of all of those things and more, and I wouldn't ever consider disputing that fact. The problem is, those things have nothing to do with me being white. As a matter of fact, I was the only white person in my class growing up for the longest time, and was on the receiving end of a significant amount of racism because of it.

And it wasn't because I am a man. In fact, when I started my career of the 7 people in my up-line (my manager, her manager, etc) 5 of them (including the CEO) were women. Despite this fact, and despite the fact that I was entering the company at a time where equality has been AT LEAST reached, there were tons of programs designed for "getting woman ahead" in the company. Special "women's leadership" conferences. Women's networking events. Women's public speaking courses offered. In it's zeal to appear progressive, the company was all over promoting any woman they possibly could. Yes, a lot of old guard male leadership were still around, but the men of my generation were basically the goats to be sacrificed at the alter of progressive ideals.

I don't even know what my point was anymore.

No reason to tread lightly, but her race still has nothing to do with it.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Her family connections to powerful people in the political realm probably has a distinct impact on this decision as well. So it's also, Celebrity Justice. (Which I find disgusting, BTW)

I feel like wealth is a huge factor here.

[–]IparryU 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That and being the niece of someone with power. Fuck this bullshit about race anf gender...

It doesn't bother you if your government hands people with penises 60% longer sentences for the same crime in same circumstance, same criminal record?

Were you bothered by Jim Crow?

[–]IparryU 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, I understand that bit, but trying to pull the label on a politician's family? Much bigger fish there. Like, how come all these politicians kids got out of the draft in Vietnam? What about the rich kid who was drunk driving, got his friends killed and walked because his dad was high on the totem pole? The rich and powerful factor is a big one.

Not only.

I know there is a gap between men and women, but i think wealth and non wealth has a huge gap as well.

Interesting. Yes, disparity, but no study really analogous study to the one on gender study cited.

The only study with appropriate controls included for comparison that I can see is one study, from Philadelphia:

"A Philadelphia study of 3,475 juvenile delinquents found that police referred lower class boys to juvenile court much more often than upper class boys, even for equally serious offenses with similar prior arrest records. When it came to upper class boys, the police were more inclined to treat the matter informally with their parents. (10) "

But the referred study at reference 10 is from 1973! Can't be considered relevant now, 43 years later.

Other studies are likewise old and obsolete:

"One study interviewed 847 males and females between the ages of 13 and 16, and found that 88 percent of them admitted to committing at least one delinquent offense. But 88 percent of these youth do not have police records; generally, only the poorest do. (9)"

... that study is from 1972.

"One study found that most public defenders spend an average of five to ten minutes with their clients; even then the subject of conversation is not the facts of the case, but plea-bargaining strategies. (11) "

That reference is from 1971.

"Not surprisingly, public defenders win dismissals or acquittals in 17 percent of their cases, compared to 18 percent for assigned attorneys, and 36 percent for privately hired counsel. (12) "

No controls for confounding variables. Reference from 1970.

Got any references with appropriate controls that are recent and relevant?

You do realize im not saying veing female doesnt have an impact, nor am I arguing that just being from a higher class is an effect but rather being able to afford expensive lawyers and pay larger fines, right?

[+]MagicTampon points 9 years ago* [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, Joe Biden is known for being not that rich -- at least he brags openly about how little money he owns, at least compared to other politicians.

I wouldn't make too many assumptions about his niece.

[–]Cagg 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So you're saying that expensive lawyers charging high hourly rates are bogus and have no impact on outcome whatsoever?

[+]MagicTampon points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

I didn't say that.

[–]Cagg 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So then having money that you can spend on expensive lawyers may have an impact on trail outcomes?

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'll add an example

To be fair thats armed robbery vs embezzlement. That being said, good lawyers can charge high rates for a reason if it had no impact the business wouldnt exist its logical.

In 2013, she was arrested for harassment, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice after she got into a fight with a roommate over rent.

Why does someone that well off have a roommate?

Who 'lends' sometime a credit card for nearly a year without even looking at the statements?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She's a first time offender, made restitution, is politically well-connected, and had great legal representation. Why are you surprised that she got probation?

[–]emjaytheomachy 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think it fair to point out this may have less to do with gender and more to do with wealth and power. Those with wealth and power do not face the same "justice" system as everybody else, and it is not unique to a specific gender.

[+]MagicTampon points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Those who are male do not face the same "justice" as those who are female, it's not just unique to a specific income.

No real basis for argument there, but I see your point. You think the magnitude of income -based discrimination is worse than the magnitude of gender based discrimination.

I would just point out that a 60% sentencing discrepancy between males and females after a 60% sentencing differential between males and females after controlling for income, crime, severity of crime, race, prior criminal record, along with a host of factors, that's large.

It doesn't even account for differences in arrest rates, early parole, or other factors.

And, it's for Federal courts, which allegedly assert greater objectivity than state or local ones.

Plus, there is a good argument to be made that access to good lawyers is not discrimination that is directly caused by governments -- it's just something that is out there that the government has chosen not to actively remedy. In contrast, disparate sentencing between males and females is a form of active discrimination by government that has nothing to do with social circumstance. There are basically police, prosecutors, and judges out there, that are saying: you have a penis, therefore we are going to sentence you for an average of 60% more. Truly deplorable.

[–]emjaytheomachy 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I have no arguments against you nor any interest in contending your general point. You are right, and the statistics bare it out, that males are sentenced more aggressively than women for the same crime. I only meant to point out that those with wealth and power tend to face a different "justice" system than those without such wealth and power. In other words, the standard "rules" don't really apply when discussing the crimes of the rich and powerful, see Affluenza defense.
