Clever cartoon on what can happen when a man DOES talk about his feelings.

Man is found NOT guilty of rape, but the cops keep telling his prospective employers that he "might" have done it anyway. Another reason why false allegations are so evil.

Of all the charitable organisations in Oz, Lifeline is one of two I regularly give to/ donate to/ support (the other being the Salvos, aka the Sally Dabs where I was born).

Of all the "men's rights" issues, male suicide is the one I will not shut up about, to the extent that I have lost (and will probably continue to lose) "friends" over it.

Lastly, a slight re-wording of a question I posed to Karen (via Mark Latham's Outsiders livestream): while I accept that any publicity about the male suicide rate (in Oz, UK, US, Canada, Europe etc.) is welcome, my beef with it is that following a brief flurry of concern and hand-wringing, the matter fades from view and virtually nothing changes... until the next media article, whereupon the same cycle recurs.

What will it take to get a real, measurable and enduring reduction in these miserable, appalling male suicide figures?

That's the great elephant in the room: Mental Illness.

Or the stigma that people continue to stick on to it. People suffering from depression or suicidal thoughts looked on as those who should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps and quit being pathetic freeloaders. This mentality, believe it or not, still is allowed to exist.

The only way to get a reduction is to reduce this stigma. But I don't know. People who don't wake up everyday, praying they make it through without killing themselves, won't ever know what it's like to have such a crippling chemical imbalance.

I am one of those people who try to keep myself distracted just so I can stay alive. But recently the distractions haven't been working and now I'm in a real bind - not sure if I'll see out the rest of the year. For all I know I could literally only have days or weeks to live. It's scary but for me it's reality. PTSD from watching something horrible in 2014 and have been struggling ever since. Medications might help me sleep but it's when I am awake that the medications won't keep away the terrible traumatic intrusive thoughts. Even when I sleep I still get nightmares and wake up in a cold sweat. I've ended up calling paramedics 5 times over the last year because I suffer from episodes with a really bad arrhythmia that I am afraid might kill me eventually.

Well, I guess if it does, all and well. At least my family won't have to live the guilt and shame of knowing that I had taken my own life. A sudden cardiac arrest would be a Godsend in just about every conceivable way. At least for me.

Accountability. Organisations from the government down need to be put under the spotlight and asked why the suicide rate is not going down and what they are doing about it. The press is not going to do this so individuals need to start asking the question directly to the organisations in question. Posting the result to social media will help too.

Specificity. When holding people accountable, you have to hold them to specific actionable things otherwise people can get away with vague platitudes for answers. Here you need to do some homework as to what works or has been recommended. Then you can ask something like 'X says we need to do Y, why aren't we doing it?

One of the main reasons I never got help when I was suicidal/depressed was because I was afraid of what people would think about me. Afraid of people saying "why is he upset, men have to be strong, you can't show you're weak". It took being taken to a psych ward after a failed attempt and talking with all the other guys there to realize that's bullshit and nobody should hide their feelings no matter what gender they are.

Depression has been a demon that has haunted me my entire life. I was into my early 30's before I finally walked into a psychiatrists office and tried to find help.

Alcoholics talk about hitting 'rock bottom'. That is exactly what happened to me. I had been suffering since my teens. More then half my life with the demon on my shoulder at that point. I couldn't bear the suffering. I had spent my entire life with these crazy schemes in order to 'get better', but it always found me.

I was at a point where I was ready to kill myself. The suffering needed to end. One way or another, it had to end. I walked into a shrinks office and I told him I would do whatever he wanted.

I had no more willpower. I was broken. The shrink would work, or he wouldn't. If he didn't, I had a solution. The suffering was gonna end. That much was certain.

Those years in between? I had this belief that if I simply gritted my teeth and tensed my jaw I could get through anything.

Here is the thing. The suffering, was pointless. It just was. I did NOTHING at 30 with the shrink that I couldn't have done at 19. If I had done at 19 what I did at 30 - my life would have been dramatically different today.

Letting people suffer until they hit rock bottom is just dumb. It is dumb and pointless.

I do believe that depression is a serious health crisis for men, but I dont think you should be open about it - at least if you live in Canada.

It will cost you in terms of your career, family life, and social network. The advent of electronic medical records means that it will remain on a stain on your medical and work records forever. Crossing the border immediately becomes harder becomes customs officers have access to this information as well. Its just another way in which the matriarchy sees men as disposable and tries to filter out the ones deemed unfit.

Right now the only answer seems to be finding a group of friends that you can talk to or going to private clinics that dont use government money for treatment. If you've got a really good relationship with your publicly funded doctor you can try talking to them - but he/she is under no obligation to respect your wishes. Many might feel compelled to include it as its part of your medical history and they have a duty of care.

[–]JebberJabber 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is wise to keep any mention of depression away from your workplace if feasible. Some employers are fine, others will see it as a black mark.

Medical staff take confidentiality very seriously. Your employer can not find out about your medical history, thought there are exceptions for the armed forces, police and maybe others. HIPAA allows for methods so the policy holder of family medical insurance can be prevented from seeing what treatment was given under the policy.

Under 18 in the US the laws vary, you can look it up but it is easier to phone the surgery and ask reception. It is a very common question, and most states have provisions for parents to be kept in the dark so children can receive the medical care they need. This is extremely common with sexual health and mental health problems, especially when caused by parents.

I talk with severely depressed people a lot, and they often find the first step to getting better is making an appointment with their GP. Some put it off for months or years, which is a terrible waste in retrospect.

Sounds like the states are way ahead of canada in this respect. Many employers from a multitude of industries gain access to your medical records when you apply for a job (not just government - banks, management consulting, engineering, etc). Many people dont realize it, and thus feel comfortable going to their GP and not realizing what they are doing.

Ideally, the government should set up clinics as they do for STDs, where people can go and get treated without it being on their permanent record. Its been an issue for a long time, but frankly, I dont see governments caring at all.

When my dad caught wind of me talking to my mom about me being that way, he just brushed it off as me being edgy. Great dad, but his testosterone-fueled masculinity is through the roof, and it's like he expects it to transfer to me and my brother.

[–]Rethgil 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Its not enough to simply tell men to "seek help". Funding and attitudes must change so that there are even structures men can seek help FROM. And less would reach such a stage if our culture wasn't so anti male and fawning over every single feminist wish instead, drowning out men's voices in the news.

Men ARE asking for help everyday. In the courts, in the news, in forums like this-the problem is the people who aren't listening.

Thanks for pointing that out. Very few of the readers if this sub realise that women have so many doorways by which they receive extra screening, engagement and support.

This sub is very focused on the denial of care for male dv victims, for post secondary education support, and for prostate cancer screening.

We rarely focus on the community services that differ city by City, region by region.

I've had a good look at this in my region since starting and running a support service for men for the last decade.

So many services in my area are women only or accessed by women largely with much of the latter due to structure or framing of the service.

Then there are general practitioner engagements where women between the ages of 15 and 35 on median see they go 2 or 3 times per year for gynecological reasons. Each of those is an opportunity for support, to ask questions about your mental health and to reach out to a real person.

I really encourage each of you to spend an hour searching in your area for support services and seeing what you find.

My guess is you'll find when it comes to proactive "we want to make your life better" services the girls have got it sewn up.

The thing I worked out recently is men do say yes to care when we ask in the right way. Due to the work of my agency there are probably as many men receiving counseling as women in our city. The men have said yes.

I'm addressing that may look like being my or our own horn that last paragraph. The point I'm trying to make, is men have been thrown under the bus. But we as a group are still working out just how far that went

Does help even work?

[–]ababydolphin 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why? Nobody helps suicidal people. Nobody cares. Even doctors will judge you if you mention being suicidal.

I feel you on this in the most platonic way.
