It's such an unbelievably entitled view. Guys would be delighted if someone held the door open for them because no one ever does (metaphorically). Women, on the other hand, get the door opened for them because they are women. It's as if she thinks men secretly behave like this when women aren't around and that her being nice would therefore be taken as an insult. It's just such a screwed up way of thinking it simply isn't possible if you are intelligent and sane.

On the very few occasions when a woman has held a door for me, it felt good. Like I was worth basic consideration as a person. In contrast, I can't count the number of times women have through a doors ahead of me and let them slam in my face.

It's worth noting that the door wasn't just kept from closing in a guy's face in this study. When they held the door, they did the whole chivalrous "you go in first" thing. The article is behind a paywall, but I'd hope it took into account the degree of confusion that would create, because that's very conspicuous and strange behavior. The testers may as well have been wearing clown suits or talked in a really weird voice or something, because the peculiarity of the event seems like a highly confounding variable.

Maybe the takeaway isn't "masculinity so fragile," but rather "people get rattled when you do something so unheard of that they question their whole reality and sanity."

That seems like a very weak social experiment. How does holding a door open equate to lower self esteem? With today's society more people in general will say they are depressed or partly depressed. If they just asked the questions out right, chances are the ratio of people lacking self esteem vs not, would be the same.

I noticed a few things when I read the original study. First, the researchers had men holding the door for others. They would do one of those deals where you open the door, let the other person pass, and then follow behind. If a man I had never met before opened the door for me and then followed me into the building, I would think that was weird.

The second thing I noticed is that the researchers don't really describe their participants, which is pretty bad and makes me wonder how they got published in the first place. All I know is that people were walking into one of two academic buildings. It's easy to believe that many of them had the same major or were even heading to the same class. Maybe. Since we don't know, we can't generalize at all, making this study fairly useless.

I dont think this study was conducted on Canadians. Holding a door open for someone is pretty common. I know thats not really the point trying to be made here i just think its funny.

Assuming this research is correct (which I doubt) is says the men reacted negatively when people opened the door for them, not just women. One theory to explain this result would be that men are socially conditioned to be self reliant and don't like to rely on others.

...I'd just say thanks and think it was nice that someone opened the door for me for a change, instead of me always opening the doors for others. Male or female, I always end up being the polite one and rarely does anyone else bother to do the same for me, even going so far as to let go of the door as quickly as possible so the door practically slams in my face. I'd just say thanks.
