News of the scholarship was circulated among veterinary students on Thursday. A female student, in her second year of her doctor of veterinary medicine degree, told Guardian Australia she was “very surprised” to see that preference would be given to male students and thought that it was an administrative error.

Given it specifically said male applicants would be given preference this seems like a tacit admission she expected it to give female applicants preference.

“It’s poorly thought out, their reasoning. They’re not addressing gender inequality in an intelligent way, and I think the university should be held to a higher standard. … It seems they care more about money than they do about my being a woman and getting equal opportunities.”

You mean how men are underrepresented in the veterinary field?

They’re not addressing gender inequality in an intelligent way,

Err...they are, actually. It's feminist "think" that is not intelligent. It's just that few people have the nerve to challenge their garbage.

The student is being silly, it is unfortunate that the article writer gave such prominence to the views of one person who I imagine is very atypical. That's what we get from not paying for news - clickbait and beat-up journalism.

It has been recognised for a long time there is a big problem in large animal medicine because women strongly prefer small animals i.e. pets. Farmers are getting by on an aging pool of male vets and are already in severe shortage in some places. Karen Straughan described seeing a roadside billboard advertising the need for a vet.

It's not even just preferences. There is a certain degree of strength that isn't sufficiently prevalent among the women who pursue the field for dealing with some large animals.

Things may be different in the US vs the UK, but I highly doubt it... while incoming students are all female, and the majority of vets are or will soon be female, it is still true that the vast majority of practice owners and leaders (heads of professional organizations, chairs of hospitals, vet school directors, etc) are male. So she has some kind of a point. I tend to think that it takes a couple decades for new grad vets to filter upwards into these positions, so all it takes is time, and also that going from 90% female to 95% female grads isn't the best way to reverse the trend of males in leadership positions, but I just wanted to address teh point that men are actually still overrepresented in leadership roles within the veterinary field, and even more drastically so given the makeup of the profession in general.

men are actually still overrepresented in leadership roles within the veterinary field, and even more drastically so given the makeup of the profession in general.

Because they've been in the profession longer. In a couple of decades, if present trends continue, women will dominate the upper reaches of the profession. Increasing males in the lower level now will ensure some sort of balance later, otherwise it will simply be going from one extreme to the other.

...that's what I said...

[–]Luchadorgreen 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You are basically saying that the veterinary field gets more mileage in general from its male practitioners, which would justify a scholarship that invests in them.

[–]realvmouse -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nope. I said that historically there have been more males, and more males over time has lead to more males in leadership roles. My exact words were:

I tend to think that it takes a couple decades for new grad vets to filter upwards into these positions, so all it takes is time

The idea that you are hinting at, that this is an issue inherent to males/masculinity in vets, not a simple numbers game, was first brought up just now, by you. I think you're wrong. But if you want to hold your viewpoint, go ahead and state it proudly and defend it, don't absurdly pin the idea on me in direct opposition to what I actually said.

[–]Luchadorgreen 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Okay Jesus, apparently I worded that poorly. That's not what you are saying, that's what I'm saying may be the case. Think I'm wrong all you want. Knock yourself out.

"The student said that though there were more women in the veterinary medicine program than men, there were more structural barriers to their advancing in the profession. There was also a gender pay gap, compounded by fewer women in senior positions.

She said the university was “misguided” to offer the scholarship – which, she was surprised to learn, was not the first to be offered only to male veterinary students.

“It’s poorly thought out, their reasoning. They’re not addressing gender inequality in an intelligent way, and I think the university should be held to a higher standard. … It seems they care more about money than they do about my being a woman and getting equal opportunities.”

...

Sun’s remarks were put to the University of Sydney, but a spokeswoman did not address them in a statement. It said the preference for male applicants had been requested by the donor, and the scholarship was open to all veterinary science students, who were “overwhelmingly female”.

“Of this year’s graduate entry for the doctor of veterinary medicine students over 90% of the intake is expected to be female. This is a trend seen over the past five years along with an increasing trend away from rural practice,’ the statement read.

There was also a gender pay gap, compounded by fewer women in senior positions.

Is she saying people with more responsibility shouldn't be paid more?
