At my uni, because of title IX, we have a women's lacrosse team and no men's lacrosse team. Idk if you've ever seen the difference between the two but, they basically are barely the same sport. Turn out at the club men's lacrosse games are much higher than the women's.

Any men's sport has to compete with the most popular/prestigious men's sport to survive, since there is a blanket 50/50 funding by gender. So wrestling has to compete against football. Good luck. There is a reason why men's sports are disappearing, the schools won't talk about it for fear of getting attacked.

Result? Lots of women's sports that few people care about, and only a few men's sports. Because big sports soak up a lot of money.

When you bring this up to people who support title 9, they invariably say "wow, yeah! Let's get together and tear down football/basketball!". Um... No. That's not a good answer, or even a functional one. Prestigious sports are there because they were popular to begin with. All of the money in the world isn't going to make men's handball a big draw. But football is. Basketball is. People buy tickets/merchandise, root for their school, and evangelize for it.

Actually, in her op-ed she does not really claim anything about Title IX - only that it has been used primarily with sports. Her view -- not unique -- is that we need to remember boys have different learning issues and we should ALSO be focusing attention on those. Fair argument -- regardless of what her politics are.

Woman in question is Carrie Lukas, from the Independent Women's Forum.

Mrs Lukas is very clearly right-wing (Princeton, Harvard, worked for the GOP and writes in Forbes).

The IWF's motto seems to be "All issues are women's issues", which can be understood in many ways.

Also, she's lived in Belgium, and now Germany, which could explain why she's not so steeped in American crazy.

.

Gender equality really seems to boil down to a merit vs free benefit divide, translating into a left - right issue.

In the US, Sanders seemed like he was rising above this, but hey, we saw what happened to him.

Women cannot ask to be equal members of men's institutions, spaces, disciplines, etc., and demand special protections above and beyond those which men receive, or even which they ask for or desire. Men are still naturally superior in all areas where the sexes are integrated because men face greater threats for stepping out of line, and have to rely on their own merits rather than others' desire to protect, defend and generally assist them.

Well, fair play to her for recognising it!

Title IX and admissions are not the same thing. Did you read the article?

[–]Halafax 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Based on their post history, I don't think it matters if they bothered to read the article.

[–]sayshey 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ya, I took that journey too. I think she's over blowing child birth a bit lot.

I can't tell if I'm looking at an extreme viewpoint or a troll. Could be either, I guess?

I don't think the viewpoint makes much sense, but everyone is welcome here to express their viewpoint. Try that in a fem-sub, see what happens.

You know, after all those decades of tilting the scales the other way:
