Anyone have more info on this story? The linked article doesn't really indicate whether this was a case of:

Teenagers exchanging nude pictures and then those pictures being used as blackmail material and/or revenge porn, or
A dude sending a chick an unsolicited dick pic and her publicly shaming him for that inappropriate behavior.

If it is (1), I think that it is important to tech boys that they can be victims of revenge porn just as much as girls can. Feminists and the media tend to portray revenge porn as a crime with only female victims.

But if it is (2), then feminist mantra is highly culpable. Shaming men for "being creepy" is a defense mechanism that feminists teach to girls and find to be desirable. Whether it is shouting louding in the cafeteria "WHY ARE LOOKING AT ME?", or trying to embarrass guys by sharing unsolicited dick pics.

I'm seeing a lot of "this girl feels guilty; her guilt is enough punishment!" from both the family and in the comments there. Why do people blindly assume she has enough of a conscience to feel terribly about it? and terribly about it enough that they think it's sufficient punishment?

Maybe she doesn't give a shit. Maybe she feels kind of badly that he's dead, but ultimately is just glad to have gotten away scot-free? Would this be a just punishment for this boy's life?

She posted this picture to publicly shame him; on what basis does everyone assume she's harboring this immense guilt about the consequences if she's evidently a big enough asshole to commit this action in the first place?

I wonder if it's just because she's a girl people think she's sympathetic and feels badly, considering the stereotype that males are cold, heartless monsters when they do things like this, and that girls are sensitive and sweet and don't really mean any harm

Anyone think if the genders were reversed the prosecutor would give the family the option to not press charges for child porn and extortion/blackmail?

Of course it never would have come to that, because if the boy called the father of the victim and told him a sob story, forgiveness would not be forthcoming.

I hate to say it, but you are assuming she has a conscience about it. A lot of younger people nowadays have the mentality that the consequences of their actions are not somehow attributable to them. For example: my crazy ex has done some sleazy stuff, and still claims that it's everyone else's fault.

What she did was wrong, but the family is wonderful for forgiving her. I just hope she wors towards being worthy of their forgiveness.

Eventually, later on down in the article, it says in part:

In December last year, Reid had sent a note to this mother saying he sometimes felt like he didn’t want to live – and had watched videos about suicide which urged viewers to talk to someone if they felt like harming themselves

So we can't say this had anything to do with the photo.

Still, it happens. No nude photos of anyone should be censorable. These are photos of the truth, a particular instant in time and space.

The whole idea of a "private area" drives up the stakes for people, and is the very cause of bad results.

It's only going to get worse... information wants to be free. If we don't eliminate pointless shame and fear, if we don't teach people how to deal with trolling and bullying, if we don't build resilience into people, we're going to get more of this. Needlessly.
