Does female privilege exist?

Based on the definition by feminists. Yes, it does exist. There are areas were women have an unearned advantage in society as a whole and those advantages are systemic.

1) Women issues are taking much more seriously by those in power, even if those in power are men.

2) 90%+ custody of kids during a divorce is a systemic advantage.

3) A large gap in sentencing and conviction rate for women

4) Women live approx. 5+ years longer

5) Funding for women specific diseases towers over funding for male specific diseases.

6) Special government agencies setup to look after womens issues

7) Special DV services setup for women only, some might say they are gender neutral but very few actually are.

I can see where their argument begins, as far as the three privileges listed being results of a (formerly) patriarchal society. Men were expected to pay for dates because women used to not have jobs or only have low paying ones, and child custody was given to women to women because they were usually the ones taking care of the kids. I'd argue that chivalry isn't a product of patriarchy, but it was just another thing that comes from previous times.

However, their obvious fault is thinking that there is still a patriarchy that causes those things, and that they still expect them.

OK - let's assume, arguendo, thst these things aren't privilege, but are, instead, the "sexism of a patriarchal society." Aren't feminists opposed to the "sexism of a patriarchal society?" Isn't thst what they are fighting? I don't see how this semantic game advances the ball for either side.

I think this nonsense highlights a fundamental confusion in they way feminists think about privilege. Even if one believes that males hold privilege (in the sense of undeserved relative or absolute power), it does not follow that all of the privileges (in the sense of undeserved benefits and special treatment) flow to men. Here, women do have privileges, and those privileges came about because men, in great numbers, believed women were weaker, not as smart, unable to care for themselves, unable to be finincially successful/independent, unable to control their emotions, limited in capabilities, etc. I would think thst feminists would challenge these benefits because they are based on extremely problematic assumptions and viewpoints. But they don't, because their approach does not allow them to recognize the benefits in question as privileges at all.

In my experince, the women in my life do not fit the presumptions that underlie the special treatment given to women generally. Maybe I just interact with a better cross-section of womanhood than most other men, but I kinda doubt it. I think many men would describe the women in their lives similarly. (Otherwise, why the fuck would you want these people in your life?) Some of the women I know fit these presumptions, but so do some of the men. Gosh, it is almost like human beings are a really varied bunch and the variation depends on lots of things other than gender. I know, I know. That's crazy talk.

Yes, but it is not captured in those examples.

Privilege, n:

a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.

Notably, something is a privilege only if it is exclusively available to a particular person or group. This does not include advantages that are merely typical of the prevailing culture. There must be something more solid backing it. To apply to society at large, a privilege all but must be captured in the wording of the legal statutes.

Free dinners on dates may be only rarely available for men, but this female advantage is not exclusive to women. Custody judges may carry a strong bias in favor of women, but the language of the law does not support them in this and they do still award custody to men at times. Chivalry has no force behind it in the current era.

To see these things as privileges is to buy into the twisted definition of privilege that feminists use and thereby legitimize it. Female privilege exists solely where it is explicitly written into law or policy.

The funding of women's shelters provides a much more accurate example. This is a remedy the better part of which is exclusive to women.

The barring of FGM also serves to reserve a right exclusive to women.
