unusual = she is a woman
leniency = avoids any punishment at all

And it's amazing the extent to which this article, and the other one linked, goes into great depths events that happened years earlier, while basically providing ZERO insight into the life of the person who was killed, the victim. Imagine if the genders were reversed, and background to the man would be ignored while the female victim, and all those who cared about her, would be the prominent focus.

Read the article. She had served 1.5 years already, and the boyfriend was allegedly abusive. Allegedly he beat/kicked her to the ground, turned around, and she got up and stabbed him causing him to die. PTSD from her son dying is also a valid mitigating factor.
