All the reports and articles in this thread (Nike Foundation, OECD, UN) have as their source for this 'statistic' a 2003 report in the Yale Daily News by Chris Fortson, who's reporting on a speech given at Yale by academic Isabel Coleman. She is alleged to have said that 'studies show girls give 90% of their income to their families, while boys give just 30%-40%'.

I just emailed Isabel a couple of hours ago, and she's replied that she was misquoted, and the statistic is untrue.

Obviously false statistic. I'm not sure how you could even calculate those numbers but that's super obviously bullshit.

Not that I've been able to find a better source for how that 90% number was arrived at. It's being quoted all over the place by various foundations, You-Go-Girl charities, and propounders of female moral superiority, often with that cut-and-paste junk DNA - "their earned income", when "their income" would suffice for an actual writer who was summarizing actual evidence.

Is this as well founded as the much-repeated fact that women are half the world’s population, working two-thirds of the world’s working hours, receiving 10% of the world’s income, owning less than 1% of the world’s property.?

Does the average female intern cutting-and-pasting this garbage into today's clickbait ("we've looked at the data, and what we found will shock you") stop and compare these numbers with her own life or that of any woman or man she knows? If she's a typical intern, there's a pretty good chance that 90% of her living expenses are paid by her dad - thanks dad!

First, we are in the developed world, so those are the figures i am interested in. Second, could it be that in the third world women make less money than men, hence providing for a family takes a greater proportion of her income?

More than likely they looked at men's and women's spending habits. Women do all or majority of the shopping buying food, clothing, etc. While men would buy inessentials for themselves like cigarettes, coffee, lunch. Therefore showing the discrepancy.
