It's total bullshit that mothers were automatically somehow better parents.

That was never assumed in this case. He was the first to file for custody, and he received that custody before they had even been found.

They were in Washington somewhere, but for all intents and purposes they were off the map for two years. He searched with few results. However, he filed for custody at the Douglas County Courthouse and was eventually awarded custody in March 2015.

Disappeared with mother

... eventually, his ex-girlfriend took Harmony and headed north to Washington.

Isn't that kidnapping?

[–]chavelah 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nope. There was no custody order in place. Her father got one, but until the mother could be located and served, she was not doing anything illegal.

This needs upvotes. So rare that we get heartwarming stories instead of rage inducing ones in this sub.

Not a lot of good news out their for what were concerned about, true. This story has a mostly happy ending, but that poor girl... Victim of parental kidnapping, finally reuinted, and she lives in constant fear that daddy will leave. He never left. She was taken. What has she been told for those missing years that has her worried he'd leave? That's the rage for me.

Not just this sub.

This melts my hearts and gives me hope for all the fathers out there fighting for custody.Props to the Judge!

Im so glad they found each other even if it took 2 years.

This guy, who reading between the lines probably has a criminal record and a history of some kind of substance abuse, got his kid back because he used the family court system correctly. He had a custody order in hand from the original jurisdiction. When he found out where his daughter was, he went to family court in THAT jurisdiction and got them to sign off on the existing order. This is how it's done. Very, very few men who have had a woman run out on them and take their kids know to do this. Spread the word.

There are exactly two words in the story implying the father was less than perfect: "lived rough."

That is a bit much to extrapolate a criminal record and drug addiction, don't you think?

[–]RedPresident 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I thought "rough" meant he didn't use protection?

[–]chavelah 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm just guessing based on what those words usually mean in articles like this. But it hardly matters, except to shore up my point that you don't have to be a Boy Scout to take effective legal steps if your ex abscounds with your kid.

[–]stemgang 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, that was an excellent point that you made. More men need to learn to use the legal system effectively.

got his kid back because he used the family court system correctly. He had a custody order in hand from the original jurisdiction. When he found out where his daughter was, he went to family court in THAT jurisdiction and got them to sign off on the existing order.

But when I first saw your extraordinary extrapolation of "lived rough" I thought it was going to turn into a justification for his not deserving child custody.

[–]chavelah 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, not at all.

[–]bigbronze 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, 'lived roughly" could mean that, it also could mean he himself was homeless, or in between jobs or whatever, the ending was what mattered. He was stabilized and used the court system right. It may have taken 2 years but he came out on top. I find it strange how they left out information about the mother. If we could see more about the situation of both of them and can see how he got custody, we can see a better blueprint on how fathers who want custody to get custody.
