Well at least the ones that showed up were considerate enough not to set off any fire alarms. And of course there's no need for feminists to reciprocate and attend events discussing mens issues. Why swap the fragrant and enigmatic ether of the one true ideology for a roomful of fusty neckbeards? Oh, and the chairs might be dirty too.

Black people don't show up to support klan speakers, why should men show up to support people who are sexist against them?

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Given men still dominate the public sphere, women's voices at such events absolutely should not be diluted with more male speakers."

I think it's because you alienate men is why we don't give a shit about your propaganda.

Does she want any men of any walk of life or label to answer or is she looking for an echo chamber answer?

[–]thrway_1000 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think this quote (at the bottom) makes it pretty clean it's echo chamber, plus listen and believe. They just want men to be indoctrinated into their cult. Not men who might think for themselves and question the dogma. It also ignores the reality that women are (and probably always will be) more valued than men.

It is astounding to me that men think they have little gain from an event such as this. Men need to hear first-hand what the world is like for women. Men need to listen while women speak.

The fact that so many still don't is a testament to how little they think we and our voices matter. And, as Jennifer Clement pointed out, nothing will change until women's lives matter more.

nothing will change until women's lives matter more.

Matter more than what? It's already women and children first. It's already assume the man is at fault is DV cases. It's already women have bodily autonomy and men don't. It's already women receive shorter prison sentence then men. How much more proof positive do you need that women's live do matter more?

[–]SRSLovesGawker 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Men - who largely run the criminal justice system - should know, as Orange Is The New Black writer Piper Kerman revealed, that women get handed harsher sentences than men for minor crimes. And that women - particularly Indigenous women and women of colour - are the fastest growing prison demographic.

.... aaaaaand we've gone fully into bullshit woo territory.

There's not a single metric of measure of any criminal justice system anywhere in the western world I'm aware of where men aren't subject to more and harsher punitive action. Men get convicted more, receive custodial sentences more, and serve longer periods when jailed across the board. You are substantially better off being a black woman than a white man when it comes to be handled by the law in the US.

So why? In part because no dude wants to be around a bunch of pissed off women being fed stories about men being mean. They may as well draw bullseyes on the backs of their heads... but another part is that it's intolerable hearing complete nonsense, manufactured bullshit and outright lies woven into that narrative.

[–]pazz 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah that was where I gave up trying to give here the benefit of the doubt. How can she possibly believe women get harsher sentences for ANY crimes in the USA.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bullshit study with cherry picked data sets that was tailor made to play to pre existing beliefs. That's usually how it happens. And if you are truly stuck in the echo chamber, you won't bother to look anywhere else.

They already have wives to tell them what to think?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, people often volunteer to show up and support groups that are essentially castigating them, en masse, for the temerity of existing and having a particular set of chromosomes.

When I read the Mexican Drug Cartel topic, my first thought was, "Do they seriously not 'get' that when the cartels hit these little towns and cart off the women, the are shooting all the men?" Sex slavery is a pretty nasty thing, but it beats death, hands down, every time.

Maybe if they ever start talking about something helpful, useful, or relevant, they will get the audience they say they want. Subject matter is important, and with drivel such as this, I have better things to do than waste time validating garbage.

Dear feminists,

Maybe start looking at women who have actually succeeded by refusing to be victims and actually working hard to achieve relevance. My wife is paid a lot more than her male counterparts because she works harder than they do and is worth more to her employer than they are. She is not a victim in any way. This is the way the world works, and whether or not you like it doesn't matter. Usefulness gets rewarded, whining gets ignored and insulted.

[–]Ninja_Turnip 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was looking through the picture of the audience looking for men, just to see how few there were. And I was actually beginning to feel sympathetic for the writer - maybe men don't care. But then I saw him, the sound guy. The sound guy was most definitely a man - You could absolutely see his oppressive aura around him as he went about his work, that he probably had to get a STEM degree to be hired for. But there he was; a man whose job it was to make the whole event go as smoothly as possible. Yep, men are the enemy. Men don't ever help women.

Intense sarcasm aside, this whole article is misandric drivel. That part about how global warming somehow being sexist is just inane and I fail to see how anyone could even take it remotely seriously.

I would show up to listen to Karen Straughan talk, and I have watched videos of women's talks from goto; conferences. I listen to people who have something to say that relates to my interests. The gender of the speaker is not important to me, what they say is.

[–]hemsae 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe men don't show up to hear these women speak because they never talk about the experience of being a man in a way which resonates with men.

They'll say things like "men have all the power in the dating world." But that's just not the experience men have. We feel like we're forced to make the first move, or we'll always be alone. We feel like we have to "compensate" a woman for the time she spends talking with us by paying for her meals, as if the conversation couldn't possibly be mutually interesting. We're terrified of rejection, but have to overcome that fear to ever get anywhere in the world of dating.

Maybe the fact that you always act like "men have it all" is precisely why men aren't attending.
