so, the discussion is basically this, if we permit people whoose sperm end up making babies not to take care of the babies, the downside is that there's a risk that the baby will be poorly taken care of.

while I agree with this in spirit, I don't see how that's any different than banning poor people or disabled people from having children.

it's odd that if a woman decides to intentionally keep a fetus that she can't take care of, it's the job of the person who accidentally made her pregnant to take care of the resulting child

I think that men should be able to petition to not be fathers to their biological children, within a certain time frame from first being notified of the pregnancy.

I get that it might be better for the child to have a parent paying child support. But a father who pays child support doesn't guarantee the mother is financially responsible and able to provide for the child. Heck having two parents who are together doesn't mean you'll be provided for.

But right now men are unfairly disadvantaged as far as their parental rights are concerned. It seems like a step in the right direction to allow for them to notify the mother that they give up rights to the child in exchange for her not being able to file for child support.

The thing that I have a hard time dealing with, is that if a man wants his baby and the mother doesn't want to carry it to term there is nothing he can do.

If women are aware that they can be left 100% accountable for a pregnancy, I would hope they would make better decisions about birth control accordingly.

Just to give some context, this is the youth section of the the liberal Swedish party, or rather the western section of the youth section of that party.

The liberal party got 5.4% of the votes in the last election, they on 7th place out of the 8 parties that actually have any direct political influence.

Reading this title and a previous one on reddit where it says the "Swedish youth party" I feel it paints a flawed picture of what's really going on. So these people are a subsection of a section of a political party that got 5% of the votes in the last election. These people are basically nobodies.

I agree that men should have legal paternal surrender equal to the way that women have legal maternal surrender. It's a delicate issue and I'm not sure this suggestion from this group does it much justice.

Though the rest of what they propose is pretty crazy, and this specific idea isn't an ideal solution, it is great to hear an idea that rebalances power to consider men for a change, and if nothing else, it makes people think about what is considered 'normal and acceptable' regarding men having no rights but all the responsibilities regarding pregnancy and children.
