"Abused" online

Seriously...

[–]chubbysumo 32 points33 points34 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

some people just are too stupid to shut the computer off...

some people just are too stupid to shut the computer off...

Not only that. Most forums and social networks offer very good filtering/blocking features. If you dont want to get abused, is it so hard to stay out of the chans and stick to the more moderated forums?

[–]Murican_Freedom1776 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can understand where they are coming from. It is extremely difficult if not impossible in a modern society to be able to get away from a computer. You're right in the sense that it can be turned off, but eventually a modern society sorta forces you back onto it to do things.

That being said, they could block the "abuser" or file a police report and have the person arrested. There are plenty of places with cyber-stalking and cyber-bullying laws on the books. Both of which are generally taken very seriously.

EDIT: Let me make it clear. Fuck censorship and fuck anyone that condones it.

Bullshit. Things like Facebook and Twitter have become an essential part of life for some petiole, especially kids and teens, and it's just silly to suggest that the solution to all their problems is to just shut the computer.

Way to go guys, that "something doesn't really matter to em so of course it doesn't really matter to everyone!" shit is really fucking ignorant.

[–]daten-shi 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Nothing essential about Facebook or Twitter. The internet? Yes.

[+][deleted] -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

To a 13-15 year old girl? Yep.

[–]Vice5772 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Really dude, you're hinging the quality of a teen girl's life on social media? How about getting past the shitty parenting that leads to dependence on twitter and facebook?

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Who said dependance? I'm guessing you haven't actually been involved in the problem with kids and Facebook abuse or you wouldn't be so ignorant about it.

[–]Vice5772 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If their emotional fortitude is based on their interaction with twitter/facebook, then it's dependence, hate to break that to you.

[–]daten-shi 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Is Facebook or Twitter needed to survive? No.

Is Facebook or Twitter required to gain life skills or learn? No.

[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Is Facebook or Twitter needed to survive? No. Is Facebook or Twitter required to gain life skills or learn? No.

You can't be serious. Do you really categorise everything in life as either essential to being alive or gaining skills, and frivolous? Car's aren't needed to survive, and neither are they required to gain skills or learn, so why complain if the police take you license for no reason?

The simple fact is that kids growing up now use Facebook and twitter as a natural form of communication. Having worked in schools i know first hand that kids who just want to fit in but get bullied to hell will still try and live a normal life, and Facebook is a bug part of that for them.

[–]daten-shi 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Comparing a car to Facebook and Twitter? That's just stupid, for a lot of people a car is needed to survive because without one there's a chance they won't be ab;e to keep a job at which point things fall a part but even then a car isn't essential in life either and someone can live a whole life without needing a car or even driving one.

Just because social media is becoming a standard of communication does not mean it is becoming the standard of communication.

the same institution that made Saudi Arabia the head of the human rights council... the whole un is a joke.

[–]korgothwashere 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is what I came here to say.

I'm glad this glaring hypocrisy hasn't gone unnoticed.

[–]qbsmd 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Seriously. Any time the UN has a choice between supporting freedom and supporting the power grabs of dictators, they seem to pick the dictators every time. How has that organization not been torn down and replaced with something saner yet?

[–]daten-shi -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Anything new would likely become just as corrupt and stupid.

[–]qbsmd 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Any organization with power seems to inevitably become corrupt and stupid, but I'm not convinced it would have to become that corrupt and stupid.

[–]triggermethis 36 points37 points38 points 10 years ago* (12 children) | Copy Link

LOL

I love how they go after online harassment of women but completely neglect to mention the actual rapes and grooming gangs rampant in Europe thanks to the muslim invasion.

The UN is a joke and they're using this as a way to censor the internet in Europe because of all the rising nationalism due in part to UN policy and the 'poor asylum seekers'. Wake the fuck up Europe.

He didn't say Europe had the most, he said it's on the rise.

[–]SuperNinjaBot 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

What the hell does the amount of rapes in the US have to do with rising rapes in Europe? Nothing. You are the one in need of an education.

'Hey man my oranges are rotten!' -op

'WHO THE FUCK CARES THOSE APPLES OVER THERE ARE MORE ROTTEN' - you

Dumbass.

Rape and grooming gangs in the UK which had vast networks of abuse stretching years with thousands of victims were populated almost entirely by men of Pakistani origin. Councils didn't speak up because they didn't want to be lacked as racist, this is a fact which has been confirmed by an enquiry. Look up Rotherham abuse.

The amount of rapes in America is irrelevant to that fact.

[–]NotThatEasily 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, I don't think you get it. The US having more rape cases than European countries means nothing in the context of what OP said.

They stated that European countries have a growing problem of rape and that the UN should be more focused on the causes of this than policing the Internet, which shouldn't be done in the first place (my added opinion).

If you want to ignore the problems of Europe simply because the US has the same issues on a larger scale, then have it, but don't be an ass about it. Surprisingly, some of us find rape atrocious whether it's committed in the US or throughout Europe.

[–]SuperNinjaBot 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Im trying to blame an influx of people who live in a different culture for upping a statistic in Europe yes.

Again how exactly does US statistics come into play here? Logic is not hard for me. I dont think youve ever even heard the term 'discrete mathematics'.

Finish school then we will talk logic. At this point its like trying to explain relativity to an elementary student.

[–]CaptainNeedleMouse 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If this comes to pass, the internet will be ruined.

Ah well, time to download wikipedia circa 2007 and prepare for internet 3 (perhaps a wide mesh network with no central backbones to own and control?)

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Didnt we basically hand the Internet over to the fcc willingly over net nutrality. Hook line and sinker...they got more power and this is how they can start policing it. Censorship at an interweb near you.

[–]CaptainNeedleMouse 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Either the FCC controls it or Comcast. Either way were fucked. And either way the feminists get their way if this comes to pass.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Using circular area charts to downplay how much more abuse men get.

[–]hexane360 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The whole report is complete crap. https://medium.com/@KingFrostFive/citation-games-by-the-united-nations-cyberviolence-e8bb1336c8d1

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow thanks for pointing this out. There is a clear agenda here without facts to support the document. I enjoyed how the writer cited themselves in the paper as well as citing other websites that also cited the authors work. Completely dishonest.

[–]cynicalsimon 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

if a woman is abused 73% online and then a man is abused 300% online

[–]hexane360 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Use archive.is so you don't support this trash article.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd use the deep web if this actually (likely) happens, but they'd probably crack down on it and charge anyone who dares to use it in such an event.

[–]Bloodblue 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Should get back to crucifying kids and not paying their trust fund baby interns and leave the mass censorship and corporate whoring to the pros. Even for an organization as pathetic and useless as the UN using the "but think of the children" war cry is reaching.

Why not start in SAUDI ARABIA. Christ.
