Native American inmates in Alabama lose battle to wear their long hair due to 'security and hygiene reasons' but all female inmates across the USA are allowed long hair. Blatant gender discrimination.

Comment that made me chuckle, courtesy of "John Tunstall":

"I really wanted to remarry the woman I divorced years ago, but she said I was only after my money."

... or women are reading the tea leaves and seeing the shitty lives of other divorced women as they age, hit the wall, become alone and live a lower quality of life after alimony/child support dries up if they can't con a man with a decent pay check into providing, provisioning, and protecting them.

I wonder how much of this has to actually do with the shitty economy and fewer men willing to marry. It's hard enough for your average woman to get married once, never mind twice.

[–]Lobstermansunion 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The declining rate of marriage means the people likely to be married are ones who's personal values (such as religion) insist on it.

Yup, sounds about right.

Sorry, I don't know the implications about these newspapers, they're utterly unfamiliar to me. I usually go for the sources they quote, but I decided to answer news with news.

Excellent, I never do with newspapers. I've read the study, and while I don't agree with some of their conclusions, the data itself is quite robust... I think, not a pro.

It's more likely that men finally learned the fried ice recipe

[–]orangorilla 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course, the fried ice secret that has kept marriages together for aeons. Ever since the first cave woman demanded a shiny rock on her finger for exclusive fried ice cream rights, the structure of society has been based around their unique ability to procure the fried ice.

This is rubbish and a good example of how the misuse of statistics that are lacking objectivity are easily debunked.

Marriage Rates have declined hugely over the last 30 years, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7314435.stm

It's a no brainer to see that this would also impact on the opportunities to divorce if there is less married people in the first place.

[–]lporiginalg 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well it's based on percentages of marriages tho not hard numbers. But it's probably safe to assume that people are less willing to rush into marriage these days which would help explain a decline in divorce rates.

[–]--Visionary-- 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

More precisely, as the marriage rate dwindles overall, the pool of married people are more and more only made up of people who REAALLLLY want to be married. Which skews the data.

[–]Wargame4life 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you are 100% correct.

[–]dungone 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Marriage rates are also relative (per 1000 people of legal age).

[–]eaton80 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Less marrieds means less divorces per the general population.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Divorce rate only applies to the married population, not the whole population

[–]MaestroLogical 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This man gets it. Statistics like these always love to leave out the obvious foundation they are built upon.

[–]Wargame4life 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

its the reverse of the bullshit phrase "fastest growing" if ever you see that in something, stop reading

[–]User-31f64a4e 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Marriage rates have plummeted.
Perhaps now women only wed when they can actually snag an alpha - to whom they stay wed?

[–]Ricwulf 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or men are realising that marriage just isn't worth risking half (or more) of their assets.

Not to mention marriage has also been devalued a lot over the years, and people don't see the point like they used to.

[–]User-31f64a4e 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's true, but doesn't explain why fewer women would be seeking divorce. In fact, the pool of single men is now larger, so hypergamy would seem to dictate even greater churn.
