Typically when someone says X destroys Y they are exaggerating, but this is a pretty remarkable clip. Brilliant young Muslim woman named Zara Faris succinctly debunks feminism in ten minutes.

I've never encountered such a concise and compelling deconstruction of feminist bullshit. Not even by Karen Straughan.

The last few minutes consist of Ms. Faris defending traditionalist gender relations under Islam. So virtually no one here (including myself) is going to agree with that segment. But it's worth viewing if only to bring some balance to the often hysterical and exaggerated portrayals of female oppression in Islamic cultures.

The idea that women are "slaves" under Islam is belied by the fact that Muslim nations have elected females to head of state seven times; that Muslim women have the right to divorce; that Muslim women have the right to work and keep their own earnings (whereas men are obligated under law to support their wives and children); that men and boys have to do all of the most dangerous work and fight in wars if necessary; that female infanticide is considered one of the gravest crimes; and that mothers have more status vis a vis children than fathers.

It wasn't that long ago that Christian women were encouraged to wear veils, dress modestly and "obey" their husbands in exchange for protection and support. Muslim women may be discriminated against in certain areas due to their sex, but so are the men.

Finally, I don't think it's fair to extrapolate what happens in war zones to cultures as a whole. The fact that an estimated 5,000 Muslim women were raped by Christian men in Kosovo doesn't mean all Christian men are beasts. War is Hell.

I say all this not to defend Islam. As an atheist I would like to see all religions go the way of the dinosaur. But if we pretend that women are mere chattel in Islamic nations we not only ignore the male side of the equation, we propagate a myth that empowers feminists domestically.
