Get a protection order. Do not talk to the police. Get a lawyer.

Be sure to tell him/her (NOT the police) the entirety of the situation, your feelings and thoughts on why you did that and didn't choose another option, etc.

Tell the lawyer EVERYTHING.

I'm assuming you are well versed on domestic violence against men. If the facts surrounding these issues informed your decision on how to act, i'm quietly confident you'll be fine. That's the absurd nature of this situation. It can cause a reasonable person to conclude that calling the police is not a viable method of defending yourself from further abuse and attacks, there are no shelters to flee too, and that leaves only one option other than just taking it unless you have pre-arranged other shelter. This isn't a happy fact. But it's the truth of the matter. Try to arrange to find elsewhere to stay so that running won't leave you without a roof over your head. Repeat performances will undermine the argument that you felt you had no other choice to end the assault. If none is available, I dunno. (Though, once again, get an actual lawyer first and just tell them EVERYTHING. This is merely my best guess at what you can argue. IANAL. Always follow the Lawyers advice first and foremost. But your mindset at the time will be important.)

My condolences for your situation, and I hope it improves. Once the legal matter is sorted, please consider getting in touch with survivor groups or therapists should you feel you require it. If you have a best friend, now be the time for a drinking session. (After the lawyer. Hell, invite them too.)

If you want to remain with your partner, insist upon couples therapy. If this insistence takes place before the legal matter is resolved, be sure to tape it. Look up in your state/country how many participants in a phone call need to be aware it is being recorded. In some, it is one. If so, use that fact and record your interactions. If she lies about it on the record, she isn't worth remaining with. Sorry.

In fact, call a friend and ask if you can come over. This is not only to remove yourself from the violent situation, but to prove that that is your priority. You should be thinking about how to distance yourself from this violence until the matter is resolved. But first, run ALL of what I said, past the lawyer before taking any other action. If the police are coming because you called them, explain you are concerned you may need a lawyer to talk to them and are willing to come to the station. This also distances you from potential violence. Call your lawyer or have them provide one. Tell them everything. The lawyer will then explain the situation to them in a way that protects you.

Don't worry. You'll be fine. Just stay calm. You need to focus on distancing yourself from the violence, and proving that is your priority.
