Dead men tell no tales. Once the wife has murdered her husband she can smear his reputation and say whatever is expedient. This is the problem with the battered woman defense.

Women murdering their abusive husbands exist, just as men murdering their abusive wifes exist.

However, the partner being abusive does NOT imply that it was a situation of self-defense. Only a fraction of male/female murderers kill their partner in self-defense, and the other deserve their sentence.

If Jonathan McIntosh claims that 90% of the women in jail for murder are in for killing male batterers, he is in obligation to provide evidence/proof. Since he did not provide such data, he is not credible at all, he's just guessing.

Also even if that was true, the question of how many men murdered women because of they where abused by them should be researched as well. That 90% number is only relevant as gender discrimination, if the gender-reversed case has not such a big percentage.

Women have lots of help available anytime and anyday, while men haven't. This means that female abuse victims have lots of ways other than killing their partners, that men most likely don't have. Under this circumstances, I would be surprised if the percentage of women killing male abusers is higher than the percentage of men killing female abusers.

Also note that a lot of women don't realize abuse when they are the abuser, but much faster realize when they are abused.

Probably, if you amend it to say "90% of women in jail for murder CLAIM they killed male batterers".

The "abused woman" defense is easily used in 90% of female murder trials...the fact that they're in prison after being found guilty should tell us a bit about what the court thought of that defense.

The first question I would ask is what if he were right? What difference does it make if it wasn't done in self defense? We're always told that men batter women because proportion and by proportion they mean the effect on the victim. Isn't the man dead and the woman alive? That doesn't seem to pass the proportion test even if she was "battered".

She can kill a man. but she's too afraid to call the police and what of men who've been "battered" by women? Not only are there male DV victims in prison who are there simply for having been victimized, but surely there are men in prison who've been in relationships of reciprocal violence. He may have been the one to kill first, but she had "battered" him on other occasions. At what point does that give a person the license to kill?
