What was wrong with "Have a White Feather You Cowardly Bastard"?

The T-shirt, which says, “I’d rather be a rebel than a slave,” is meant to inspire women to fight for the right to vote.

More feminist propaganda. As if women don't already make up over half of the voting population? And they were given the right to vote without having to register for the draft!

I love that the backlash against "White Feminism" is a thing. It's such an easy jump to compare the historical and current oppression of blacks to the oppression of men (Which I got from Warren Farrell's book, "The Myth of Male Power"):

  • Blacks were forced through slavery into dangerous jobs that at times cost them their lives. Men can be forced through the draft into dangerous military positions that at times can cost them their lives.
  • Black slaves had their children involuntarily taken away from them. Men still have their children involuntarily taken away from them through biased divorce courts.
  • Blacks were forced through slavery into the most hazardous jobs. Men are often forced through socialization into the most hazardous jobs.
  • When slaves would historically give up their seats for whites we called it subservience. When men give up their seats for women we call it politeness.
  • Apartheid forced blacks into unwanted jobs in order to mine diamonds for whites. Socialization forces men into unwanted jobs in order to buy diamonds for women... So that the women will love them more.
  • Blacks are more likely to be homeless than whites. Men are much more likely to be homeless than women.
  • A higher percentage of blacks are in prison than whites. Men are 16x more likely to be in prison than women.
  • Blacks often get harsher prison sentences than whites. Men get harsher prison sentences than women.
  • Blacks are less likely to attend and graduate from college than whites. Men are less likely to attend and graduate from college than women.
  • The life expectancy for blacks is lower than whites. The life expectancy for men is lower than women.

In many ways that you can discuss about the historical and current oppression of minorities when compared with whites, you can make the same argument for men when compared with women. So yes please, feminists, keep complaining about "White Feminism."

Men were only given the right to vote if they registered for Selective Service. It is still that way today. Not only that, men aren't able to receive federal student loans, grants, or work study and if prosecuted and convicted they can face a fine up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years... Just for not registering. Also, states can levy their own penalties; for example a man might not be eligible to receive a driver's license.

Women are given all these things without the obligation for registering for the Selective Service.

Who said I was "pretending the woman's suffrage movement was easy?" You're reading into things, friend.

And the Selective Service has been around for almost 100 years.

I am sorry if I misunderstood you about the woman's suffrage movement

No worries. And I agree, this sub can be a bit of a circle jerk at times. I may have my opinions, but I always appreciate other people's experiences and to be challenged by their perspectives--even if I don't always agree with them.

It's a federal crime not to register.

I recall something about convicts not being able to vote, at least in several states.

And no- it hasn't been called in a while, but On the day I turned 18, I was forced to sign a contract or go to jail. Who the fuck cares what was in the contract... That's. Not. Ok.

Given the contract stated that I would drop my entire life to serve the nation in time of war or national emergency if called- like it or not- it's an especially big deal I think. I can refuse combat or front-lines service, but must serve in some fashion if asked. I was threatened and bullied into signing away my right to say no... To ever refuse or retract my consent to the nation's demands upon me.

But I guess freedom of choice isn't the kind of freedom men have in this country.

You realize before the "women's suffrage" that women could (and did) vote right? That the vote wasn't tied to gender but property ownership which admittedly was a privilege afforded mostly to men. Not most men but some and which the same system allowed some women to vote?

I noticed that Streep defines herself as a humanist. I may be mistaken, but that seems like backtracking from her previously identifying as a feminist. I take this as a good sign: perhaps she senses a shift in the wind?
