Great article. It's important for people to realize that sexual coercion is not a uniquely masculine trait, and that being a victim of that coercion is not a uniquely feminine experience.

The survey used the federal Bureau of Justice definition of rape

ie not even remotely a real legal definition of rape, but made to sound like it is. It doesn't say but the only likely candidate is the UCR definition of rape which was recently updated at the request of feminists to expand it a lot when the attacker is male and the victim is female, and of course, exclude male victims of women altogether.

[–]EmpathyOverSympathy 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Agreed. The Bureau's definition is complete garbage, and it's what is fueling this whole rape hysteria. When is the CDC going to get the message that people don't consider a lot this stuff rape or sexual assault? I'd really like someone better versed in this topic than me to sit down in a room with the CDC researchers and explain to them how socially irresponsible they're being.

I would have gone with "explain to them how they're morons", but your way would probably work better.

The most common tactics for forcing or trying to force sex were guilt, deliberately getting the victim drunk or arguing with or pressuring the victim.

One couple's coercion is another couple's healthy discussion about their sexual relationship.

They have redefined it to coercion to assist in the rape hysteria of both adult women and teen "girls", to create more victims.

[–]mariox19 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Just to be clear, the article says that on reaching age 18, women are almost as likely as boys to be coercing someone into having sex. That's not quite what your headline says.

[–]mwobuddy 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I love the language used. Suppose I don't feel personally like having sex at the moment, but a woman wants to. I might do it, willingly, fully consenting, even though I don't really feel "in the mood".

MEN AND WOMEN have practiced this forever. Its part of give and take in relationships. The reason we're having a hard time with it now is because it has been defined as rape since people now call it "coercion", which implies lack of consent.

If you DO NOT CONSENT TO SEX, DON'T TAKE YOUR CLOTHES OFF. DONT SPREAD YOUR LEGS AND/OR SHOVE YOUR DICK IN. IF THEY FORCE IT AT THAT POINT, THEN ITS RAPE. NOT BEFORE.

[–]amratheavenger 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It sound so simple right. If they say yes and agree to it, than it is consensual. If they say no and you still do it than its rape. But now we have coercion which could mean getting them drunk or guilty tripping them. Maybe that is being manipulative but it isn't rape.

Trying to get someone to do what you want by arguing and making appeals to their emotions doesn't meet my definition of coercion.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well, there has to be a difference between coercion and intimidation, and I think that difference lies in a shift towards manipulation and social shaming rather than raw physical pressure or threat of violence.

[–]qemist 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Would the acts in question have been unlawful in the pursuit of any other goal, such as a sale or donation to charity? if not then there is no reason for them to be unlawful in pursuit of intimate contact. Surely it is the nature of the act not the goal that determines whether the act is coercive.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was speaking purely about the nature of the definition of the word, but I actually agree with you here. If you can hold someone quasi captive at a resort and compel them to watch all sorts of sales videos in pursuit of selling them a time share, you can put the lean on to separate someone from their pants.
