So either he himself doesn't care about male victims, or he thinks it's not worth it because a jury wouldn't care about a male victim and so prosecuting would be a waste of time.

Either way, something is wrong.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd say both. First, jury wouldn't be as sympathetic to a male victim as a female victim, that's a fact.

Second, the DA would be in some hot water politically for making such a move. The sheriff's office wouldn't like it, might not trust him in the future, etc.

Can't tell if jab at women being weaker than men in general, or if it is sexism towards men.

[+]McGauth925 -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

It occurs to me that feminists are winning by portraying ALL MRAs as misogynists. That keeps it from becoming a mainstream issue, and gaining the kind of media attention that women's issues enjoy.

Maybe what we need is to really tone down the all-feminism-is misandry rhetoric. Or, we need an MRA group that does that. That's the only way men's issues stand any chance of being heard. When the media is giving people what they want, and they want to hear stories of male disadvantage just as they do with women, then female privileges will become more apparent. People not associated with MRAs will begin to do our work for us. Allowing women to continue to paint all men who are concerned with equality as misogynists is a losing strategy.

[–]morrispated2 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think the bulk of what you're saying is good but we can't allow nor disallow feminists to do what they do because we have no control over what other people do and say. We shouldn't even want to control what other people do and say. Hypocrisy should never be tolerated and that's the point of shedding light on feminist hypocrisy.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Hypocrisy is an extremely valid target. The biggest part of what men don't like - I assume - is unequal treatment from the very people who claim to be about equality. Part of our job is to point out the hypocrisy at every opportunity. How we do that is the key, for me. If we're foaming at the mouth, totally enraged, I think we lose, big time.

[–]RedditorJemi 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No. We can't assume anyone's going to do our work for us. We do not assume that the fight is going to get easier. We need to stay vigilant and be wary of people making false concessions. Feminists are going to fight us tooth and nail, and that's exactly what we want. Feminism does not win by fighting us.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't assume. But, we watch feminism. It isn't just feminism that's causing changing our society. It's when people who aren't feminists think some of their ideas make sense that they start to become mainstream. If MRAs talk to and influence only other MRAs then they remain virtually without influence, without power.

You think EXTREME feminism is highly influential? I think not. I think they get used as a way to say all feminism is basically evil. But, simple equality - that's an idea that caught on.

And, you're flat out wrong. THE thing I see feminists AND what seem to be just normal people point to about MRAs is misogyny. That's why we're not getting a voice, even though men's rights is, at base, about equality. We're making it easy for people to simply discount us. That's simply stupid.

[–]RedditorJemi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We played softball for several decades, and got nowhere. AVFM came along, and now we're suddenly a force to be reckoned with. If you disagree, by all means start your own feminist friendly site, or just join r/menslib. They're nice and soft and love to make concessions to feminists' unreasonable demands.

[–]Arby01 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Maybe what we need is to really tone down the all-feminism-is misandry rhetoric.

It won't make a difference and also won't get attention. Stop thinking that saying "pretty please" is a good strategy.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You characterize it as saying pretty please. I think of it as refusing to continue to give feminists the evidence of misogyny and extremism that they use to turn people away from supporting equality for both men and women.

You simply assert that that won't make a difference. I assert that it will, and that we have nothing to lose by having a faction of MRAs who can be pointed out as NOT extremist, whose facts stand up to fact checking, and who provide solid evidence for those who's minds can be opened.

Some people devolve into polarized isolationists who influence only those who share a similar bent. I say we can do better than that.

[–]Arby01 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think of it as refusing to continue to give feminists the evidence

I think of it as "being invisible".

we have nothing to lose by having a faction of MRAs who can be pointed out as NOT extremist

I support that idea, not everybody is going to have the same thoughts or values or priorities.

That's not what you originally posted though, you were trying to silence others:

what we need is to really tone down the all-feminism-is misandry rhetoric

Perhaps you meant "we need a non-offensive sit politely in the corner example of MRAs to point to when accused of misogyny" but that's certainly not how I read your passage.

Allowing women to continue to paint all men who are concerned with equality as misogynists is a losing strategy.

I disagree here. Allowing women to paint men with valid concerns as misogynists has been the strongest argument this movement has. It's only a losing strategy if the concerns are false. In which case, it should lose.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you have a case, you make it. If you choose not to make it in a way that people are willing to hear, than that simply means nobody was listening. Or, all they heard was one more man in the throes of serious misogynistic backlash. Many people do respond to well-reasoned argument.

[–]Arby01 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Many people do respond to well-reasoned argument.

you are living in a dream world.

[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

When the media is giving people what they want, and they want to hear stories of male disadvantage just as they do with women, then female privileges will become more apparent.

This is incredibly naive thinking. Men and women have an instinct to protect women. Most are not going to give a shit about men's disadvantages and female privilege just because they start hearing more about it. We will always have an uphill battle getting people to care about men. I think we need to keep pointing out feminist hypocrisy and hope those whose minds are open will listen.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I believe that more TRUE stories of female privileges and male disadvantages can only help. I don't see a major difference between that and pointed out instances of feminist hypocrisy.

Feminists tell us X. Actual evidence shows female privilege and/or male advantage.

Feminists tell us Y. Actual evidence shows female privilege and/or male advantage.

What's so incredibly naive about that?

[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree that it can only help, and I'm not against doing it. I just felt that your wording

and they want to hear stories of male disadvantage just as they do with women, then female privileges will become more apparent.

seemed a little bit too optimistic. Hope I'm wrong though.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ok, but given how well that's going so far...but, maybe things are changing in small ways. Just maybe it's a snowball effect.

Plan B! I'm hoping that people speak up in other forums. Me, I can't help myself. And, it seems to go better when I respectfully make a clear case. People respond about whining, and I remind them about how sexist that is, to say that men shouldn't complain about anything, simply because we're men. So often, people just don't make the switch, and imagine what would happen if the genders were different.

Please do. This sub makes a habit of calling out all the outrageous things feminists say, but neglects to mention any of the positive things. It would be like judging all MRAs based on the ones who are also RedPillers. I have seen comments on this sub that say things like "Women getting the right to vote was pointless." That's why we're all being called misogynists.

Calling all feminists misandrists makes about as much sense as calling all MRAs misogynists. There are some in both group. They do not represent everyone.

[–]Jander97 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

I have seen comments on this sub that say things like "Women getting the right to vote was pointless"

Can you reference any of these? I'm not saying they don't exist, but I feel like anytime I see anything stupid like that, it gets downvoted below the threshold.

Not that we should call all feminists misandrists, clearly not. But we also shouldn't be afraid to call a particular spade a spade when that's exactly what it is. If we see feminists that do seem sexist against men, that's what will get posted and it will be bitched about. I would love to see articles written by feminists that support mens rights, but I'm more likely to find dozens of articles that tells men to be feminists for equality.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/3jtmru/men_are_now_the_oppressed_sex/cuskfum

There was also definitely an upvoted comment in another thread that said "Women got the right to vote and nothing changed."

I'm all for calling out bad behavior when there's a clear bias between men and women. But calling out radical feminists/people who say things like "All men should be put on an island" or whatever is just arguing with lunatics anyway. That's like dedicating a thread to RP arguments. Yes, it's kind of fun, but it's easy pickings. That person is crazy.

I wish this sub could pick a new word for man-hating feminists. Most of us are not man haters; a lot of us actually care about men's rights and actual gender equality.

[–]eletheros[S] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

You don't get to point at downvoted topics and claim it defines the reddit. Nor do you get to handwave about "upvoted comments somewhere somewhen" and claim they exist.

I wish this sub could pick a new word for man-hating feminists.

"Feminists" works. The error occurs when you pretend anybody but the people lobbying gov't for laws to men's detriment, and getting both the laws and gov't funding, don't define feminism. They are the feminism that matters.

[–]soulless_ging -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

? That was a gilded thread, and the comment I pointed to within it was upvoted.

And yes, I know that taking my word for the other one doesn't prove much.

Regardless, I know that that doesn't define the entire community. I already made the point that a few sexists within a group shouldn't be used to castigate the whole group. But they do tend to cast a bad light.

"Feminists" works. The error occurs when you pretend anybody but the people lobbying gov't for laws to men's detriment, and getting both the laws and gov't funding, don't define feminism. They are the feminism that matters.

Sigh.

Gilded takes one person, not a community, nor does the fact that a message prior to the one you linked being gilded even show that that one person approved of the message you linked, which is quite obviously negative.

This sentence from garbledcluster has 8 upvotes:

The fact that women didn't have the vote until the 20th century is utterly irrelevant as they weren't forced to fight and die against their own will.

I know that's not a lot, but it's considerably more than the surrounding comments. The guy who pointed out that women and men were oppressed in different ways, however, has -4.

[–]eletheros[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

garbledcluster isn't the post you linked too. lrn2link

Furthermore, garbledclusters post does not match your claim of posts saying "Women getting the right to vote was pointless"

I see no reason why "A handful of men got to shape history indeed, but the average man was in a significantly worse position..." should be down voted, as it's clearly true.

[–]soulless_ging -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I purposely linked to the previous comment to give context to garbledcluster. I thought it was obvious which comment I was talking about; Jander understood.

And I am aware that that did not perfectly match up with what I claimed. I linked to it because I could not find the original comment I was thinking of. But it was close, as men being drafted should not mean women are denied the right to vote. One has nothing to do with the other.

[–]Shanguerrilla 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I just think "men's rights" sounds like a group mostly concerned with men's rights... while feminist (in its current 'wave' or at least as generally discussed) typically is about women's rights.. Neither are a bastion of 'equality', but rather two sides of a scale and what I hope the silent majority of both are working towards is balancing it, because typically when they take from one side they give to the other.

Feminist is a dirty word to me, but not because 'we' use it. We use it because there are women gallivanting around as self declared 'feminists' who have pretty extreme views and clearly don't want 'equality'. IE: the type of women, to me, who identify as "feminists" typically don't care about my rights or well being, just as you won't normally find a men's right activist fighting for better battered women's shelters and programs against abuse (which is a GREAT service, but rather extremely under represented to help men).

Basically, I don't think men made feminist a dirty word. To me it is the movement itself that has transformed into something with unhealthy goals. I champion your ideals that you can see both sides and perspectives, that you really want greater equality.. Men / women "true equality" will always be an unreachable ideal balancing checks and balances.. it would have to be a perfect mix of permission and protection and I can't even imagine what it would look like without the destruction of 'gender roles' or the things that make us different.

If you don't like the word feminist, then you should find a new word or a new movement, because I don't think today's feminism is really about equality any more than The Red Pill is.

[–]soulless_ging -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I just think "men's rights" sounds like a group mostly concerned with men's rights... while feminist (in its current 'wave' or at least as generally discussed) typically is about women's rights.

That's totally fine. And you're right that extreme feminists exist. I'm just saying they're the minority, so it looks bad when MRAs consider "Feminist" a dirty word outright.

[–]Shanguerrilla 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry I kept editing it while you were responding.

I really don't consider 'feminist' a dirty word or a cutdown on any individual or personal level. I don't think most feminists are on-board with what (admittedly) I imagine most leaders are. I don't think feminists are bad, but the movement itself and the headlines (the extremes) and much of the results are very much 'negative' to me.

I just think feminist is too broad. Every woman has a part of her that says 'yea, I'm a feminist because I care about women!'. But there are just SO many different goals or ideals splitting out from that. I don't know much about feminism, I just know the headlines and see the results of their actions (like some of the inequality in our legal system).

The best way to organize people is against a common enemy. I think both sides are fighting this problem (of being pitted against each other). I think the only way to be a 'feminist who believes in equality' and have it not have negative connotation and/or be that and have a place in the MRA movement... is when people understand 'what kind' of feminist you are. I think there needs to be more specific of a name for your goal.

"I hate men, men can't be raped" extreme feminists will always poison the name just as (well honestly, not even as much as) how everyone views Men's Rights Activists as sexists that want to subjugate women and take their rights (which I believe is also most women's natural reaction to hearing a man is a Men's Rights Activist).

[–]Jander97 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not seeing where anyone but you used the words "women getting the right to vote was pointless"

If your objection is to "The fact that women didn't have the vote until the 20th century is utterly irrelevant as they weren't forced to fight and die against their own will." I can see why you might not like the sentiment, but I don't think that's the same as saying women voting was pointless. Also there is plenty in the rest of the comment worthy of upvoting, regardless of the final sentence.

Isn't feminazi the word for man-hating feminists? It's the same problem with the MRA/MRM as well though, as people tend to think both mean misogynist.

[–]soulless_ging -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can't find the example where someone said "Women got the right to vote and nothing changed," but that's about the same as saying it was pointless.

And feminazi is, but I rarely see it being used here. I think people dislike it because of the word nazi. Feminists are usually just lumped together as a group of evil people.

[–]McGauth925 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. But, this is something that needs to get publicized and talked about, before some men get it that they're shooting us all in the foot.
