Bullshit one way doesn't magically become less bullshit the other way.

Circumcision doesn't raise the risk of contracting HIV, telling people that it reduces the risk does. People gonna be "why should I spend money on condoms, I got circumcised, everyone is telling me that protects me from aids amirite?".

telling people that it reduces the risk

I wonder whether some of the better funded agencies that promoted this disaster can be held accountable financially.

It's kindof like abstinence only sex education, just leaves people ignorant.

No shit. Of all the things that will end up looking like neo-colonial abhorrent human rights violations, the circumcision campaigns and entirely predictable HIV transmission increase has to be the worst.

The worst part is it's never been about HIV in Africa, it's just been a stray thread of US and EU politics surrounding circumcision. And pressuring people to get genitally mutilated by letting them believe it will let them sleep around without using condoms, just so you can deflect criticism against your own custom of violating children's rights to their own body is truly behaviour that falls within the realm of actual evil.

No shit. Of all the things that will end up looking like neo-colonial abhorrent human rights violations, the circumcision campaigns and entirely predictable HIV transmission increase has to be the worst.

The thing is that an increase in hiv infection is not so predictable. The problem is that they are instituting a massive program of circumcision combined with condom counseling. The circumcision is, in fact, an excuse to give people condom counseling, and these programs are targeted to areas where the program is least likely to have negative blowback. As a result, if in 10 years they cause 1,000,000 cases of HIV while preventing 1,200,000, then the program will show a modest 10% success rate over a 10 year period - attributable entirely to the condom counseling. Of course, since the program will result in a massive short term reduction in the amount of sex the circumcised end up having, over a period of 1 or 2 years their results can look fantastic - say, causing 100,000 cases of HIV while preventing 150,000 - a whopping 20% reduction, which of course, is largely attributable to the short term effects of the circumcision and the specific choice of location.

What this is is a last ditch effort to prop up the dying circumcision industry by manufacturing a success story. Do not expect this to result in any genuine blowback. The Malawi story is bullshit, concocted by someone who has pull within the BBC so they can say 'oh, well there was a story about the circumcision campaign causing HIV in Malawi, but it turned out to be a hoax.' Their perceived credibility goes down briefly after the original story is aired, and then it goes way up above what it started at after the story is revealed to be a hoax. It's a psychological trick, taking advantage of irrational features of human psychology to manufacture consent to a program that has no value whatsoever.

The thing is that an increase in hiv infection is not so predictable.

If you combine the likelihood that the claims that circumcision will protect will result in a long-term higher rate of sex without condoms (after all, what was the point of the circumcision otherwise? As far as I can tell there's no difference between circ or non-circ once actually using a condom) with the actual limited protection it affords for the male and zero protection it affords the female, I think it's quite easy to predict a higher long-term infection rate.

Do not expect this to result in any genuine blowback.

I don't expect any short-term blowback. I do expect that we'll be hearing demands for reparations for it in 50 years or something. But yes, I mostly agree with the rest of your comment.

Was watching this video of a shark being finned alive and you could see the pain; started wondering what it must feel like to have part of you torn off and you'll never get it back.

Most people have a difficult time accepting what circumcision really is. The implications of its allowance are just too much. It's terrifying, a culture controlling sexuality through the removal of body parts.

A couple of years ago, I was in a car with some friends, and the two women, who incidentally, were sisters-in-law, were jabbering non-stop about babies. I was getting bored with all that talk, then the subject turned to vaccination, and that they felt guilty for putting their kids through that pain. I considered this. If my friends felt guilty for causing their daughters momentary pain that would in the long run benefit them, then how could other parents, my dad included, have such little empathy for their own sons that they'll have them mutilated for what is essentially, no good reason.

Even if there is some truth to the claim that MGM reduces the risk of HIV infection; this doesn't excuse the lies that are told to these African men.

They are not informed about the functions, structures and properties of the male foreskin. They are not showed the compelling evidence that they are losing the most sensitive part of the penis, and that the amputation will cause loss of sensation and major function.

Then they are told barefaced lies: "women prefer it [so what if they do?]", "it's cleaner", "it's the western [ie: Amercian] thing to do", "it's the love cut", "you will be a real man".

Such lies and misinformation would be totally unethical in the west, and would be illegal.

Disgusting modern day mental slavery.

Who'd have thought amputating random body parts weren't a health benefit? Amazing revelations science brings us these days.

[–]azazelcrowley 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's both a more and a less useful study than that.

Less useful because it's telling people that it helps with HIV that raises the risk, not the circumcision itself. (It makes people think they must be resistant to aids, when that's not true.)

More useful because it means we can now go rules for radicals on the pro-circumcisers and call them pro-aids and point out this study if they lie about this shit.

[–]babno 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Correlation != causation. Sanguifier's explanation that people believing they are protected being circumcised does seem like a much more likely reason.
