It's only unfair if you believe in equality.

I don't understand how these things work in these highly tolerant societies.

Can I just say I feel like a woman if I get caught parking there?

"Officer, I may have a penis, but the woman inside me chose to park here"

Paging Caitlyn Jenner

Actually, there's a cartoon addressing this tactic: http://www.cartoonkaufhaus.de/miniposter/115/mp435%20-detail

It's in German -- where similar parking spaces exist in a lot of places.

Translation (roughly):

[sign on back] Parking spaces for women only

[woman talking] "Well, I'm going to let this pass."

As for how these things work: Simply, make it appear that violence affects only women and bank on chivalry. You can never go wrong if you bet on peoples ability to delude themselves as heroes.

So, you are saying I should say I parked in the Women's Only spot so I could more easily protect the women should they come under attack?

That also sounds like a good strategy.

grin

I guess the overall idea is that you have to walk longer distances to places which are not covered by CCTV to protect women. But hey, if you paint you car white, perhaps with a heraldic sign on the doors and a plume on top, it might work. The "white-knight-o-mobile" is out there to protect ;-)

"I'm just getting in touch with my feminine side!"

The netherlands is not that tolerant anymore. Not even close.

Pee on women only?!?!?! That is unfair!

[–]Captaincastle 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Does that say hate?

Check your local laws but where I live there's no enforcable law that goes with that sign more like a courtesy such as the pregnant and small family parking you find at malls.

OP, where did you take this picture, I just looked on maps and there doesn't appear to be such a sign near the haje restaurant

[–]Felix135[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think it's Haje 'de Lepelaar'.

[–]CraftyDrac 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No sign there, so its probably removed already

[–]ashlaaaaay 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Wasn't aware that Google street view was updated 100% up to the second

Funny /s

[–]leifblower 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, fuck Holland then.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Was that spot much bigger than the others?

I'm shocked and appalled that the sign post is not padded.

[–]SlashSero 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The real question is, how in the fuck are they going to enforce this?

[–]MonkeyCB 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So just park there. How the fuck do they know to what gender a car belongs?

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Apparently the parking spaces close to the buildings are for women only, because the other parking spaces are located next to the woods in poorly lighted areas, and it's known women have been harassed and sexually assaulted there. At least that's the explanation I could find after some digging. Still discrimination, yet maybe justifiable discrimination.

But men are more likely to be the victims of crime.

The sign is working!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Very true. But of course it does depend on the type of crime as well as the setting.

By the way, I wasn't stating special parking spots for women are the right thing to do, since I haven't done enough research on the subject to make up my mind. I just wanted to add an extra point of view as to why those parking spots exist, so this wouldn't instantly become a female privilege circlejerk.

[–]raps_caucasionally 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is it female privilege to have your safety prioritized over males so much so, that you get a whole parking lot for it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It could very well be. Like I pointed out before, I wasn't taking a stand.

Yet although men are generally more likely to be the victim of crime (but less regarding sexual assault outside of prison), maybe that exact parking lot was known for the high amount of female victims, compared to little to no male victims? I'm just saying, before making all kinds of assumptions, there might or might not have been a justifiable reason for discrimination. And to me it seems reasonable to assess those possibilities before getting your pitchforks out.
