Clever cartoon on what can happen when a man DOES talk about his feelings.

Man is found NOT guilty of rape, but the cops keep telling his prospective employers that he "might" have done it anyway. Another reason why false allegations are so evil.

So a woman writes an article about a male issue from the perspective of a woman and in response to a woman's letter?

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure they've tried to lynch men for far less. Hell, Tim Stanley isn't even allowed to discuss the topic of abortion at the most prestigious University in the world. http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/i-helped-shut-down-an-abortion-debate-between-two-men-because-my-uterus-isnt-up-for-their-discussion-9867200.html

Hell hasn't frozen over. They're discussing the issue because this particular case is negatively affecting a woman. Just like workplace deaths were no big deal until the % of women dying rose. None of it is coming from an area of concern for men.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I might have disagreed with that were it not for the "make sure he doesn't rape you!" part.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I should add, I mean the article itself existing. Not the woman who sent in the initial question, she most likely meant well, but the fact that the question saw the light of day.

meh, this is not so sympathetic to men as the title suggests.

he is a man, with a girl friend, he OWES her sex (and of course a myriad of other things....), ergo, she must still get sex, and his feelings are secondary to her desires.

I don't actually think this is that surprising for the Guardian. It's a typical "Good Men Project" piece written by and for post-menopausal women who understand cats better than they understand men. Any man reading the linked article will chuckle immediately at the bizarre and surreal point of view it has on the issue of violence against men.

Men are not the same as women, and they do not recover from problems or deal with problems the same way as women. Trying to treat this kind of problem (a violent relationship) in the same way as a woman would is stupid, and any guy reading the article knows it, because it frankly sounds comic.

I think we are getting way off track by praising Good Mangina Project menopause-journalism. Men do not need women to start thinking of us just like we were also women - we need legal protections, reproductive rights, and spaces where we can talk about our problems with other men, and places where we can read about male problems from a male perspective.

Yeah, except we're not all alike, actually. And this kind of post is why you guys keep seeing men join up with your hated enemies in feminism, no matter how many times you reassure yourselves it's just about getting laid.

Also, if masculine dudes want more masculine dudes offering safe spaces for masculinity, how about actually starting them, in the real world, and not just the AAA gaming industry's single player options?

[–]KickedToTheTop 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I don't know what AAA gaming is.

There are three main reasons men "join up with" feminism:

  1. To look good. Most male celebrities who make carefully planned public declarations of allegiance to feminism are in this category.
  2. They want to be chivalrous. They have learned from somewhere that it is crucial to treat women better than they would expect themselves to be treated.
  3. They are afraid of or threatened by other men. They may have experienced bullying or abuse, and find it difficult to relate to other men. Or they may simply not have grown up with men around them. In either case, they distrust all-male groups and feel more comfortable in mixed groups or female groups.

It's actually not true that male feminists "join up with" feminism for sex, although being human, they are not free from the shackles of sexual desire and promiscuity.

AAA gaming means mainstream big budget games.

[–]FallingSnowAngel -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And some of us are just more feminine, or androgynous, naturally...or just not overcompensating for something... and actually share some of the same problems and concerns as many women. Since men's rights really thinks it would be awesome to be sexually harassed, and really seems iffy on whether or not it's okay to simply fuck people who are paralyzed by fear/emotional shock, because they can't say "No."

And you just offered horrible advice for how to approach a guy like me after I was raped by my ex-girlfriend, it's pretty clear that you want men's rights to only be a reflection of dudes like you.

To which I can only say "Fuck you too." This shit's why I'm a feminist.

You just made these things up out of thin air, falling snow angel (?). You're free to be a feminist if you want. They are the ones making it impossible for you to seek help or get legal retribution if you are sexually abused - that's something that isn't made up and easy to prove.

But looking at your other posts you seem to be trolling quite a lot, and I can't even tell if you're actually male.

[–]FallingSnowAngel 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You just make these things up

So, now that you know I'm not, has anything changed?

I left FeMRAdebates over this issue, in part because it led to scenes like this one.

[–]triangleman83 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How can I uncomplicate sex in his mind?

Dear Guardian, men obviously can't be affected by sexual trauma like women are, how can I tell him to man up?

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

"In the meantime, try to let him be the one to initiate, to chose when and where, to decide on the style and so on. This might be difficult for you – and you must certainly stop him if he oversteps your boundaries – but it may initially help to soothe his anxiety and fear."

Sigh.

[–]SilencingNarrative 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Unbelievable. I don't even know where to start.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yep, every man is a potential rapist -- even the rape victims.

[–]chocoboat 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I really don't think that sentence is bad at all, in the context of that paragraph.

She's saying to give the boyfriend control of the situation. Let him choose when and where, let him choose the position and style, let him be in control of everything so he doesn't feel threatened... but with the reasonable caveat that if his choices aren't OK with her, that she needs to say no to that.

That isn't treating him like a rapist, it's just ensuring clear communication.

[–]ZucchiniSky -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. You guys are misreading her...she doesn't mean that the woman should stop him if he tries to rape her, she means that she should initiate sex or change the style if she feels her sexual needs aren't being satisfied. It's completely reasonable and a man in the same position would be expected to do the same thing.

See, even when they help men, they are still doing it to help a woman. Don't get me wrong, it's good that they are trying to help at least, but it is still because it benefits a woman.

[–]UrMumsMyPassword 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

See, you could make that same argument against male therapists and counsellors, "they only helping the women so they don't be crazy around the men!" It just seems unnecessarily cynical to me.

I think the key difference with this piece is that it was written by a qualified expert rather than the classically trained dog whistlers and click-bait generators The Guardian usually depends on.

[–]Ricwulf 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Good point. Maybe I am just getting a little too cynical, and someone just needs to tell me I'm being an idiot.

[–]UrMumsMyPassword 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I imagine we all get that way mate, especially with stuff that's close to the heart.

Dont get your hopes up-this is no ordinary writer, she is not staff, she is the wife of famed comedian Billy Connelly, who publicly admitted being abused sexually as a child. She used to be a comedian and was a regular on Saturday Night Live at one point, but quit to become a therapist.

Im not knocking her, just pointing out that she is a very lone, singular voice with a fame cache, which is why The Guardian published what she said. No way would they ever regularly employ anyone else who said such things as it doesnt "sell to the feminists" and that's all that advertisers, and thus corporations care about now.

Great that she spoke up, but dont take it as any kind of indication of change in either that paper, or social attitudes. Sadly.
