So I've heard this term a lot through the years and there are even signs on some buildings in the U.S. (safe space signs on fire stations and police stations). It almost always refers to spaces where children can be left if the parent/parents can't take care of them, or where children can go to escape abusive homes. But something I've noticed of late is this term being applied to universities and colleges. The Oberlin College Choir used it in their satire about the Sommers incident, feminist used it extensively when talking about removing a dissenting student from a class (that should be a "safe space"). What is it that feminists mean when they say, universities should be safe spaces?
