In the article we have this:

Girls certainly experience the majority of sexual assault incidences; only one in 10 victims is a boy, according to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN).

Clicking on the RAINN link takes me to a page with this:

Men and boys are often the victims of the crimes of sexual assault, sexual abuse, and rape. In fact, in the U.S., about 10% of all victims are male.1

And, further down, they list 1in6 as another organization they are supportive of:

And on the 1in6 website we have this:

What happens to any of us as children does not need to define us as adults or men. It is important to remember that that 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before age 18 (see The 1 in 6 Statistic), and that those boys can grow up to be strong, powerful, courageous and healthy men.

So, RAINN is claiming that 1 in 10 sexual assault victims are male (so 9 out of 10 are female), while 1in6 is claiming that 1 in 6 males are sexually abused before 18. Taking those together, we have, assuming roughly equal number of males and females in soceity, 9 out of every 6 females being victims of sexual assault.

I suspect there is a power struggle going on inside RAINN with some factions wanting the abuse of men to be taken seriously, while others can't let go of the idea that sexual violence is gendered. So we get organizations talking out of both sides of their mouth.

From the article: "33.2 percent of teen boys with a sexual assault history who reported attempting suicide, only 27.1 percent of teen girls with a similar history reported a suicide attempt". So although more boys will attempt suicide after sexual assault than girls the effect is pretty much the same. This is why we have age of consent laws.

I was molested as a kid, and the lack of support is staggering. All the support groups I have access too are female only, and the two mental health professionals I've reached out too didn't know how to help me. Minimized it, that sort of thing.

I have to say it's this lack of help that's far more damaging than the initial assault. It's like an injury- it hurts and it'll leave a scar but if you treat it you'll be mostly fine. But if you ignore it, it gets infected and it's much worse. I did try to kill myself a few years ago, and while I still think about it frequently the possibility of help in the future makes me keep going for now.
