Here's a little back story. I met a girl at a party around the time of this child's conception. The girl and I had a one night stand. During the pregnancy the girl was certain that I was not the baby's father, but instead her long distance boyfriend (a guy I didn't even know existed) was the suspected father.

Around a month ago, I got the dreaded phone call that this guy took a paternity test and it was determined that he wasn't the father. The girl told me there is one other possible guy that could be the father, but I can tell by looking at pictures of the girl that I'm the father. She's the spitting image of me as a baby.

Now, I'm going to be honest and say that I don't want any part of any of this, if I would have known I was the father while she was pregnant, I would have suggested abortion. I'm not currently able to pay child support due to several factors and the mother is already seeing someone else. So it isn't like I can just move in and turn this situation into a happy little family kind of deal.

I haven't been called to take a paternity test yet, I haven't signed or agreed to anything. I'm awaiting a call sometime this week to take the paternity test. I'm fucking terrified. The girl has told me that she is more than okay with raising the child by herself, and the only reason why I'm even being forced to take a paternity test is because the child has Medicaid and the father is required to provide for the child if they are enrolled in Medicaid.

What are my rights here? I'm unemployed at the moment, and I suppose that must change if I'm required to start paying child support. So, what are my rights regarding termination of parental rights? I live in North Carolina, by the way.

Any helpful or calming words are much appreciated. My life has been in a permanent state of panic for weeks now.
