Benevolent sexism reflects evaluations of women that are seemingly positive. Examples of benevolently sexist attitudes include the reverence of women in wife, mother, and child caretaker roles, the romanticizing of women as objects of heterosexual affection, and the belief that men have a duty to protect women.

It is when men throw a coat on gutter water so a woman can walk over it. It is when men open a car door for a woman as a ritual to claim her. It's behavor that took on the form of being a 'custom' that, looking back, is on the creepy side today.

It's one of the few things I agree with feminists.

They want it both contradicting models and if you have to think for a moment to decide if they should have it both ways you are a lost cause, because benevolent sexism is wrong to the becringe of both thirsty men, and usey women.

Why was this even a post? Women aren't disabled just for being women...

I think it would be different if it was someone elderly or disabled, because then yeah the decent thing to do would be to give up your seat to someone who will have a harder time staying standing during all the jostling of the subway car. I'm female and I always gave up my seat to people who looked like they needed it more or even anyone who asked just because it was the decent thing to do.

I know a lot of people include pregnancy in the disabled category as well and I think there are cases where it can be (in which case I don't think there's anything wrong with the woman politely asking if she can sit), but having just had a child I definitely wasn't fragile or incapable at any point of my pregnancy of performing most normal functions (okay bending over to tie my shoes wasn't possible but standing was perfectly fine).

Unless the person is older, disabled, or asks for a seat for some reason then keep sitting. I’d feel so weird if someone offered me a seat because of my gender.
