r is correlation. Square it first and you will have, for example:

r=0.25r2=.25^2=.0625,multiplie x100 to get a result in %, so with r=.25, this mean that one variable explains 6.25% of variability of the other variable

With p, this can be caluclated by hand, but usually it's done by a computer program, even MSExcel. Normally for research it has to be below 0.05. Divide 1 by .05 you get 20. So there is one in 20 chance that the results of r that you got, you got by pure chance. The lower the p the better. You get lower p as you use more data, and there is for example a stark difference between two groups (for example a placebo and actual drug). Mind you this is not just research stuff, but once understood, it can be used in the real life, and to perform even unskilled job very well, better than you averge worker, that's for sure.
