Getting a good lawyer

This question comes up so often, the mods should pin it to the sidebar.

Other men will have their own ideas. For me, I wish I'd researched the lawyers more. E.g.: if possible, look up other cases they've argued and won (or lost) -- and which judges were presiding. It's probably too early now to know who your judge will be. But for me, the relationship between the judge and the two lawyers was important, and I didn't know that until much later.

In some counties, you can go online and research this. If the judge was elected, you can usually search to see which lawyers or law firms donated to his campaign.

Basically, you need to be sure you're being represented by someone who has a favorable history with the judge. If you can't Google this info, or get it from the courthouse via research, then THAT would be the #1 question I'd have when interview perspective lawyers.

Now, all of this was true in my venue. But other venues might be different. I just happened to be in a small city where everyone knows everyone. Your mileage might vary. The judge and the opposing lawyer had a professional relationship. My lawyer was an outsider. In fact, the judge ordered a GAL who had a professional relationship with my ex's sister. The judge had even been a neighbor of my ex's grandparents! I didn't know any of this until it was too late.

Mark Twain wrote 100 years ago: Would you rather have an experienced lawyer from the best law school? Or a lawyer who has lunch with the judge?

Ask for recommendations from the lawyer of other happy clients in your situation. If they can’t give you one or two, move on.
