File a police report about the domestic abuse now. I made the mistake of never reporting it. Get a good lawyer and don't cheap out. Get every scrap of evidence you can about her being abusive. Record every phone call, conversation, interaction, etc. Do this to protect yourself and for evidence purpose.

Get a lawyer, yesterday. File a police report. Check the laws in your area first and if you can get voice recording device and carry with you at all times and video cameras in your house. Never be a lone with her again.

This part will be even harder but tell the kids (depending on their ages, adjust how you tell them) you love them and will always love them and you want to be with them and will always want to be with them, no matter what anybody says. That they can call you anytime and that they can ask to see you any time and you will do all that you can do to make that happen. The idea, being that you give them those messages continuously so that if they don’t see you eventually they may come to understand it isn’t on your part, it is their mom’s. (I am not saying to manipulate, just be honest with them on what you would like, for your and their relationships).

As well as sorting the legal stuff you need to start working on yourself.... in fact start that process now. What I mean is look after yourself, pick up the phone and speak to your friends/family, build your support network....eat healthy and get exercising. Have a drink if you must but don’t let it be your crutch, knock drugs on the head if you do indulge... now is not the time to be getting high. Go for walks. There are plenty of social media support groups out there ... join them, they really help, Rising Phoenix on Facebook, Divorced broke and Paleo on YouTube ( don’t worry about the paleo part- it’s not a pre-requisite). Start to care for yourself because it’s a long road, you’ll be pleased that you took it but make the journey easier by following the above. Oh, and lift weights... it really helps.

File for divorce immediately, and petition the court to return the children to the marital residence. Do not let her move away continue uncontested.

I've noticed that it is always advised against moving out of the marital home, is there any particular reason for this?
