When you open Excel, there are templates available to choose from. Pick one that says "household budget". It will have spaces for income, expenses, and a tally at the bottom of each category.

I just use Excel, because I have it. Google sheets would work as well. Across the top I have the column names: Description, Paid, 15th, 31st, Date, Confirmation #, Notes. The paid field is where I put an "X" when it clears the bank. I know the 31st, isn't completely accurate, but I get paid twice a month. I have been using this for 10 years. A fair amount is Auto-pay, but I track that as well. I change the text color from black to green when I have paid it. Really simple. I also sum up the totals and deduct it from the deposits. I also monitor my accounts weekly, and my primary checking daily on the mobile banking app. When my wife and I seperated, I set her up with the same.

You never thought you'd have to pay your own bills??

Assuming that you're in the position financially to cover all your bills every month, I'd suggest putting as much as you can on autopay. I have almost everything on autopay, with the exception being the credit card I use daily (I pay it in full every month, but I want to see the bill before it gets paid.)
