Negotiate layer fee?

Some do, some don't but $100 off an hourly rate is pretty meaningless as the lawyer can just not write off time they would otherwise write off on a discretionary basis in an effort to keep the fees reasonable or workable. What you should really do is ask the lawyer how you can control your legal fees (e.g. save your lawyer's time). For example:

Work with admins, paralegals and junior lawyers whenever possible
Don't walk in without an appointment when you can schedule an appointment, don't call without warning when you can schedule a call, don't have a call when you can just email, don't email separately for every little question, just collect issues and send one email
Do your own document collecting and organization by subject and reverse date order, don't just hand them a stack
Don't use them as a therapist

I don't have much experience here, but I highly doubt it. I can't imagine any self-respecting attorney would negotiate their rate. What I'm saying is that if you want a reputable attorney, I don't think it would be wise to try to negotiate. That being said, all reputable attorneys were once associates. Less expensive, good representation is out there. However, from my perspective, you really want to hire an attorney that opposing counsel would really rather not go to trial against. So, at the end of the day, it's better to just spend the money up front than risk getting screwed down the road.
