Is this normal? I have a hearing for a TRO on Tuesday. We were able to get in a response to it and the exparte motion was denied.* Then came an onslaught of declarations from (former) family and even a friend of mine (she joined the sisterhood). My lawyer sends me an email saying "these have been filed, let me know how you'd like to respond." Like, that's it. I did get him on the phone, but basically he said "Go point by point. Anything you don't dispute will be accepted as not contested." I figure, for this TRO, we've filed a few hundred pages of responses and declarations and petitions in opposition, and I have a hard time thinking that anybody is going to ever sit down and look at all the awful and counter awful there. I expected that my lawyer would say, "Look, this is the story you need to tell" and he'd give me some advice on how to say what would resonate with the court. I mean, if I didn't have an office job where I typed all day I find it hard to believe how I'd beable to put together the responses I have. We've hardly talked since the exparte was denied, and I am expecting to hear from him before the early morning hearing on Tuesday, but I feel like I'm going in with my pants around my ankles not knowing what STBX is going to throw at me, or how my lawyer is going to respond. He forgets one detail and I am going to be on my back foot for the rest of the divorce. I feel like STBX spewed a bunch of stuff and I spewed back, and the lawyer's involvement has mostly been to file stuff.

My understanding of the hearing is that the judge will ask a couple questions, STBX's lawyer will make me look bad, my lawyer will try to undo some damage, and then STBX gets to take the parting shots. After that, the judge signs, refuses to sign, or punts to a full trial. I'm on defcon4 responding to this river of shit, but I also feel like I'm just shooting back randomly. Is this just the way it goes?

*Background: there's no DV, this is something I actually did right avoiding. STBX left me with the kid months ago and is now twisting it into me "kidnapping" her, and doing irreparable harm by homeschooling, and all this other weird stuff just thrown in to make me look bad. Family jumped in with their opinion of our family and blaming me for not doing everything they would have done. I can't believe her lawyer would try this with all the evidence I have that STBX approved of everything, but here I am. I think the cherry is that STBX asked me to bring the kid to her while we figure things out, and meanwhile her friend was sending her texts (that they submitted into evidence) that basically lay out how she just has to say "he scares me" to get custody and make me leave. Yes, I know I'm the bad man and I "took my child from her mother's love", but I really can't believe they are trying to get a TRO based on this. Anyway, my main question is, am I just paying my lawyer to file this stuff and hope that he at least reads it and can mount a defense for me in court?
