... I mean that's certainly a statement.

I think women are more likely to file for a variety of reasons:

1) Finances

they are financially incentivized by unfair divorce law. Your income doesn't matter when it comes time to split assets, then suddenly it does when it comes time for alimony and child support. Men typically lose out both ways. A woman can get alimony and a boyfriend and gain 90% of the financial benefits of being married while also profiting from her alimony as well.

42% of divorced women claim they got married for financial reasons as opposed to 90% of still married women thar say their primary reason was for love.

2) there is a discrepancy in divorceable behavior

I think this has less explanatory power but men often do engage in the behavior that is cited for divorce more commonly. Men cheat a bit more than women in marriages. It's something like 21% vs. 15%. About half of marriages cite infidelity as a cause. The reason for the discrepancy could be intrinsic to be a man, cultural or some other factor. One reason I've heard is that since women tend to marry older men, it can be the case that a older married men cheat with younger women who are less likely to be married. But older women will cheat with older men who are more likely to be married.

Some of this I don't even think "fault" is measurable.

One factor is that men tend to do more paid work and less housework and women don't appreciate the more paid work nearly as much as they would prefer more housework.

Another issue might be "meeting emotional needs" but who knows if that is better explained by women being too needy or men being too unwilling

I think with the cheating is that more often when men cheat it's seen as a non-negotiable whereas men will more often be open to reconciliation to keep their families together. A lot of times these men are then blindsided when she leaves for AP anyway after fi ding fault in something the husband did. I'd be curious to see the numbers on infidelity reconciliation for men vs women

Back to

If a man cheats he's a disgusting horn dog

if a women cheats it's because her needs wasn't being met

also more women will cheat "emotionally" which is easier to hide or deny and lastly a guy being the person a women cheats on is unlikely to develop feelings to the point he tries to get the women away from their marriage or blow up the situation by telling the other partner meaning that more guys are "found out" by the person they are cheating with telling their partner.

I mean I do agree sometimes. Some women settle down too early, or convince themselves that they like a traditional role when they really want freedom and independence. It’s more lying to themselves and thinking that love itself will be enough to overcome what their mind needs vs. externally lying if that makes sense. I’m the type of person who feels like staying home and being a full time homemaker and mother is stifling. If I married a man who was dead set on being the breadwinner with me staying at home and told myself that I was okay with changing for him, my mental health would deteriorate to the point where it would severely impact my behavior, both towards my husband and when it came to basic functioning.

I mean, bully for you, but what about the massive number of instances (including my ex) where being a SAHM was what she basically insisted on, and I not only applied no pressure whatsoever either way (a big part of my general, very ill-advised-in-retrospect quest to keep sacrificing absolutely everything I could to try to satisfy a person who ultimately could never be satisfied, because the real issue with her unhappiness was not mine to solve), but I actually facilitated her preference by dutifully earning more than enough to make us comfortable on my salary alone??

You know how she thanked me for giving her exactly what she purportedly wanted? By continuing to complain that I "didn't do enough" domestically/with the kids, despite my doing basically 50/50 when I wasn't literally at work earning 100% of "our" money, in addition to everything else I contributed beyond the paycheck (which was a shitload). Had the gall to complain about bearing that crushing "mental load" of buying kid clothes and sending Christmas cards, when that was literally her only job in our "partnership."

What about, you know, that sort of case, which practically every other post from a man here seems much closer to than some fantasy scenario of some domineering man "forcing" his wife to stay home?

[–]HedgehogHole 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah and that’s also valid. I don’t think a woman has an inherent duty to stay home, but I do think that if she makes that choice herself vs. being pressured into it, she has no right to complain. Especially if she recognizes her own unhappiness and doesn’t take steps to fix it.

Also I’ve stayed at home and worked and I can confidently say that in both situations, buying kids clothes was the highlight of my day and I actually looked for any excuse to do it 😂 no crushing mental load there. Obviously every parent should know their kids’ clothing size, shoe size, etc. and be aware of when the kids are due for doctor/dental/eye appointments, but usually the scheduling and shopping burden falls on the parent staying home. It would be like me asking my attorney to organize, label, and bates number her own exhibits while I sat there and played 2048 on my computer. She’s already dealing with her own job, my job is to pull my weight on the back end. Staying at home is a job and as such, carries responsibilities.

I’ve seen a LOT of divorce cases with stay at home parents and it usually boils down to the fact that there is an unequal work distribution combined with financial strain. Be it an unrealistic expectation for the working parent or an unrealistic expectation for the stay at home parent. That’s actually one of the reasons I decided to go back to work—I could feel it pulling at my marriage and I realized that if something didn’t change, we were also going to fall into the classic trap. I really don’t think a lot of stay-at-home partnerships are sustainable long term. Don’t worry, we’re in agreement here

Yeah, your perspective here, in stark contrast to my ex's, is eminently reasonable.

The added insult to injury in a case like mine (where someone chose to stay home, then complained about how hard it was to do the only things that were her (chosen) responsibilities in that role) is when the divorce comes around (her choice, not mine, naturally), she gets to double or triple dip by acting like her staying home was some huge sacrifice (false, it was her preference) that gave up so much career/earning power (false, she never had that potential even if she'd chosen to work, as was her option), so I now owe her half of what I made + support in the future for those things. Basically, benefitting from some hypothetical arguments about what the equities of our roles might well have theoretically been when in fact our actual lives had nothing like those dynamics in play. Courts don't give a shit, she gets to benefit from rationales for compensation at divorce-time that are simply factually inapplicable to our actual marriage. The law is just so unjust in cases like mine that it's truly absurd.

Yeah working in the field has lowkey made me somewhat of a men’s rights activist. Yes there are plenty of cases where one party stays at home out of necessity and legitimately is not able to work due to income restrictions etc. and they actually do need support to get back on their feet, but there are also cases where people are looking for a way to cash out

[–]fives_gw 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For sure, in concept I have no problem with the notion of dividing assets actually fairly and even providing prospective support where it's necessary to, e.g., prevent one party from falling below some reasonable standard of living while the other sits in a mansion. But that's just so so so far from how the existing laws get applied in so many cases (including my own). Which then essentially means that some individuals are reaping an absurd windfall by exploiting protections meant to shield the most vulnerable that should, by all rights, have no application in their own factually-very-different case. (E.g., oh, your husband made literal millions singlehandedly?? Better just scale up 50/50 and pile alimony on top for a non-earning spouse who affirmatively opted not to work herself. Just because the earning spouse earned some crazy surplus. Just plain unfair.)
