I hate that commercial because I gave my daughter the worst stepdad and every time I see that commercial grab the remote. He was just like Chris He started out nice and then he was a nightmare!

It's that of children who are abused by a parental figure, 80% of them were abused by the stepdad. But that's a pretty small subset of children with stepdads.

I get the sentiment of the rant. And I agree that it's scary that the idea of broken families is so common it can become an angle in advertising.

My parents split up when I was 10. Dad remarried a year later and mom started dating the man she remarried a year or so after that.

I never called either of my steps mom or dad and just called them by their names

Both second marriages had problems

Ironically my step dad is dying from the same circumstances as my step mom who passed in 2014.

I can't speak for anyone else's experiences, but my step father is the best man I know and I consider it an honor to call him dad. Being honest here, I am not sure how I would feel about my sons calling another man "dad". Am I a hypocrite? perhaps... but I suspect all of us who face this issue will never see another man as good enough for our kids. It is a shit situation and we all face different challenges. I suppose we should just hope for the best, try to be open minded, love our children and be the best fathers we can be.

While I get that the ad could be triggering for some people, particularly divorced dads who feel they're fighting an uphill battle, it's worth noting that advertisements often deal in idealized situations—they're not documentaries. They're designed to evoke emotion and, ultimately, promote a brand.

That said, I agree that the portrayal of men in media can often be one-sided, leaning toward either the bumbling dad stereotype or, in cases like this, the too-perfect-to-be-real stepdad.

It's a complicated issue with no easy answers, but making sweeping statements like "step parents are a disaster" is probably not fair either. There are plenty of blended families that work really well and step-parents who provide loving, stable homes. Media portrayals are one thing, but they don't capture the full range of human experience.

There’s no way 80 percent of step parents abuse their kids. It’s far less than ideal, but unfortunately women will continue to dump their husbands at alarming rates regardless of any commercial. And the odds are if you have kids, your ex will eventually marry again. I doubt Publix was trying to advocate women getting divorced frivolously.
