In the US, it's about having final decision making for healthcare, education, extracurriculars and religion.

Mothers aren't better parents than fathers. The reason mothers end up with more custody is because dads too often fall on their sword.

Make it joint only, because if there is a surgery she wants performed on the child and you don’t, then she can override you. Same for educational choices, all kinds of stuff that you need a say. Don’t give her exclusive right.

I used my join managing conservator right to override a foolish surgery she wanted done when my son broke his nose. Long story, but I got it overridden and hospital stopped the surgery.

You don’t want to give her ultimate authority.

It might say split legal custody but that means nothing if she holds the trump card.

There is also a thing called "Joint custody with tiebreaker". I'm sure you can see how it's impossible to have a "tiebreaker" in a 2-person committee. That's just nice-sounding speak for sole legal custody.

Remember, though it might take a little while in the courts and she might need a convincing reason, if she has sole custody she can move the kids away from you and shoulder you with the burden of traveling potentially hundreds of miles to see them.
