I have something of a theory about men and women psychologically. Let's say the ideas of hypergamy are not completely baseless and, especially with social media being what it is, the majority of men and women are getting higher and higher standards for what constitutes a "good" partner (like, what it takes to be a catch, not what kind of partner they should be chasing), in that classic 1-10 scale sense, especially when each partner heavily engages in social media.
Say a 5 pairs off with a 5. Both of them see the algorithm for their own sides--the guy sees that his girl chose him in spite of an abundance of men who seem to have so much to offer, and vice-versa, even though both partners are actually fairly average, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong here--the guy is likely to look at this situation and think "I can't believe she chose me in spite of all these better looking, more accomplished men. I need to prove myself to her. I'm going to bend over backwards to take care of her like no one else can." And as a result, he focuses on her happiness. He doesn't have the nerve to disagree with her. He "simps" for lack of a better term.
The woman sees these more attractive, younger, flashier (often photoshopped) women and thinks "I don't measure up with these girls. There's no way he's actually into me. I bet he thinks about other girls. I bet he's cheating on me when he's not here or at work. I bet he doesn't actually mean it when he compliments me." And as a result she treats his affection with suspicion and effectively keeps a leash on him, preventing him from leading like a man (which would be more attractive).
Since the man is treated this way, he assumes it's happening because she is indeed "out of his league" and responds by "simping" harder, creating a similar push-pull dynamic observed in pleaser-avoider personality pairings. He tries harder, her suspicion grows, and the tighter her leash, the more she loses attraction and respect for him. Eventually, she's miserable and looking for a way out.
How likely is it that the above described dynamic plays a large role in many modern divorces?
