Numerous male victims of rape have been hidden from the statistics due to the way the crime has historically been defined (i.e. it's often legally defined as something a man does to a woman).

I have a feeling this new take on domestic violence will get used in much the same way to hide male victims. DV will appear to be a highly gendered crime, something that men perpetrate against women, due to the change in definition. Meanwhile, DV perpetrators are actually pretty close to 50/50. And if we're talking about unilateral DV, where one partner does the fighting and the other doesn't fight back, women make up 70% of the perpetrators.
