What makes losing weight so difficult is people ignore the mental/emotional process of it, and only focus on the “easy” (term used very loosely) physical part of it.

Your mind plays a much bigger role than people realize, in my experience. Stress, putting way too much pressure on yourself, not forgiving yourself or being too harsh when you make mistakes... there are a million ways to sabotage your own progress—and that goes for any goal you’re trying to reach—that people can’t physically see. It’s discouraging to hear “but it’s easy!!” when the mental and emotional battles are anything but.

I’m in agreement with you, all the way. People fight invisible battles all the time, it’s unjust to label someone as “lazy” when they just literally don’t have the energy to fight anymore.

I’m very fat positive and I’m glad you made this point. However, I don’t like the way you framed this.

You don’t have to have thyroid problems, PCOS, etc. getting in the way of you losing weight—our modern life (especially in the U.S.) makes weight loss MAINTENANCE (losing weight is the “easy” part) very very difficult.

The biggest loser study demonstrates this. After losing weight, your metabolism slows so you would have to eat much less than someone of comparable size. This metabolic slowdown remained after SIX YEARS (possibly longer, that’s just when the study ended).

Anyway, everyone on this sub, reddit in general, and the entire internet—I am begging you, stop shaming fat people. It actually makes them less healthy because it leads to dieting, then metabolism slowdown, then regaining weight. Read up on intuitive eating and health at any size. Be a better person.

going on the biggest loser is literally the WORST way to lose weight ever. it should be considered abuse and literally promotes eating disorders/overexercising. it's soooo unrealistic to the average person's life (waking up at 6am for a three hour workout, having multiple multi-hour workouts per day, having a personal trainer and personal chef) and, like you said, doesn't do ANY psychological work at all as to why the contestants had gained weight in the first place. for example, a lot of victims of sexual assault or csa purposely gain weight to become less conventionally attractive and therefore avoid more abuse; roxane gay goes in depth with this in her books as she was raped at 12 and developed a series of eating disorders afterwards. anyway, if you just ask someone to lose weight for cash and don't address the reasons they gained weight in the first place, don't be surprised when they start gaining again once the incentive (aka $$) is gone. the biggest loser doesn't even teach healthy eating habits or sustainable eating habits for the average person. instead of a private chef, the show should have had a nutritionist or chef give tips on how to eat cheap and healthily but also how to make food *fast because some people only have 15 minutes to grab dinner so of course they're going to choose a big mac over a baked chicken breast. the show isn't about getting fat people to be healthy and it never has been. it's always been about losing as much weight as you can during the show. it's not about setting a workout routine you can stick to or eating healthy affordable food or working on your mental health. losing SO MUCH weight SO FAST is dangerous for your heart. ironically, one of the trainers on the biggest loser had a heart attack attack just a few years ago while crossfitting at a gym. he was in a coma for two days.
