I don’t think that Debra Newell is a pickme, tho. She’s a prime example of how female socialization can really fuck women’s lives up. Debra was raised by a religious woman who defended/forgave the man who killed her daughter because daughter was going to leave him. If you’re taught from a young age to ignore red flags in men, it’s hard to get away from that.

Also, John Meehan was a psychopath and a master manipulator. He enjoyed living off successful women and he did it for a long time. I don’t think it’s surprising that Debra Newell fell for it. He knew exactly which strings to play.

I read the newspaper series about it and was aghast. Debra is a pickme raised by a mother who completely didn't care that a man murdered her sister.

S1 female lead daughters were a mess, and she was a pick-me. I think in her cause it was easy to ignore because she was trying to escape from her life. While she was successful everything else in her life besides her money, business, and house was a mess. Her oldest daughter clearly has undiagnosed issues (mentally), her sister was murdered, her mother seems disconnected and she was too a pick-me, I could go on. So while the signs were there when you yourself are emotionally looking for an escape you ignore them.

I watched the second one Betty gave her entire life to that man. Her family was very sexist and misogynistic as well. I never justify killing someone unless in self defense. She should have picked up on the sign he was slowly disconnecting from her, as soon as he became a lawyer (in fact in law school). He was a POS from the beginning.
