Over the course of my professional life I have know about half a dozen ex-child soldiers from South Sudan who have grown up into the most incredible, community-minded young men. I've known so many boys from the most depraved and horrific upbringings who - with the right support - become brave and upstanding men.

Don't let these low expectation having motherfuckers excuse their way out of personal growth. If they can, anyone can.

Middle class American males are the absolute worst about this. "Ugh but my mom didn't buy my fave tendies so now I don't know how to love."

I faced my fair share of adversity growing up and I never make excuses about it. I use it to motivate myself to be better y'all.

I really couldn't stand someone who makes excuses for themselves instead of acknowledging yes you had it rough but still working hard to live a better life.

Living his best life and helping others.

Excellent post and point. Look for a man who spends time helping others who ARE NOT in his family and/or can't do him any favors.

One of the things that really sold me on my hubs was how much time he devoted to helping strangers clean up and rebuild after SS Sandy. He and his family are in construction so he donated materials too. NEVER bragged about it. The only friends he told about it were those he recruited to help out on sites.
