How to answer "hey/hello/what are you doing" caliber texts?

I always match their effort with equal effort. If he says Hey, then I just say Hey back and leave it at that. It acknowledges him and shows you're open to communicating, but you don't expend any more energy than he is putting out for you. If it never moves beyond that, then move on.

I've stopped responding to texts like these. I'll give slightly less than what he's giving me and what's less than "hi?"

I can't just respond with "h" or "i."

If it's the very first message leave it on read and give them a certain time to up the ante before unmatching.

If it's between ongoing conversation I would match ("hi" back) to acknowledge that I'm in a position to be having a text convo right now, otherwise would ignore it. I kinda hate dragging a conversation out all throughout the day.

It's kinda the same energy as in-person greetings. If I'm walking down the street and a stranger greets me they'll get a nod, an aquaintance gets a smile and maybe a returned greeting. A friend or colleague will get some actual small talk.

To a stranger online my read receipt is a nod.

Depends if it’s between good conversation or not- but if it’s not going anywhere I just don’t respond and he’ll usually reply with a more interesting question later.
