Financial abuse is-and always has been- one of the primary ways men attempt to control women. As women become more educated and begin to out earn men please DO NOT BE FOOLED into thinking you cannot become a victim of financial abuse. If anything, a higher earning woman tends to threaten men and they may become more likely to attempt to financially abuse you as a means of control to protect their own ego.

Honestly even 50/50 can get like this that’s the insidious thing.

At the end of a four year relationship we were splitting 50/50 even though he made 20k more (and the gap widened significantly at the end). He would spend to his limit and I would be wondering why I was broke every month. He would be making random purchases on amazon while I was scrimping to go out with friends for lunch and not saving any money. I cannot believe I stayed with someone so selfish now that didn’t care about my financial well-being to such a degree.

Just before I broke up with him he did another classic “spend an insane amount of money at the grocery store.” (Of which we were spitting 50:50 but I bet dollars to donuts I was not consuming 50:50 of). He had the audacity to think I owed him half for groceries I was never going to get because I had just broken up with him....

I’m not sure my friends would qualify as fds but luckily they were better than my pickmeisha ass back in the day. I was torn about whether to pay him back and luckily my friends were like “NO! Do Not Pay Him Back!”

Looking back now I can’t believe I was so torn. And this is also why it’s important to surround yourself with good friends and keep pickmes at a distance. Had even one friend said “yeah you should pay him” I probably would’ve. In the grand scheme of things it’s not a large amount of money, but it was MY money.

Financial abusive men also hide and rename your assets before or during a nasty divorce. Always manage your assets by yourself ladies! Even if it’s convenient not to, and even if he’s HVM. Your independence isn’t worth the risk.

Protect yourselves ladies. Never let him know anything about your financial situation, or have ANY access whatsoever to your finances. He can and will use it against you when his mask slips. Get a prenup, and stay safe.

Also for the people in the back- DO NOT BUY A HOUSE OR ANY FORM OF REAL ESTATE TO SOMEONE YOU ARE NOT MARRIED TO. You have no protection and you will most certainly end up on the bad side of that investment.

Men are inherently awful with money - so many of them are unable to delay gratification or set long-term goals. It takes a huge force of will and effort - not to mention clever accounting - to get them on your path to financial independence. If you can avoid involving a man in your financial plan, DO IT!
